The 'New' H&K

Speaking of HK... this was the biggest Pleasant Surprise at SHOT, and I'll talk about this on Armed American Radio Sunday... but HK isn't the same company we've all known. HK: Because You Suck, and We Hate You That was a little Motto penned by our good friend Larry Correia. Well, HK knows at Motto and the President of HK wants to change that. I was invited into a special closed doors session with a small group, about 10 people, with Todd from Pistol-Training.com and the President of HK. We had a very open Q&A session about HK and where they are going. Guys, I'll be honest... from a Company that had positioned its self almost out of the market with their attitude and almost complete lack of customer service... they have come around. I went into the little meeting with the sole intent to just try to win that give away P30 pistol. I had no interest in HK as a company. But because of their President, his openness, his frankness... and his expressed desire to undo that "You Suck, We Hate You" image... I was convinced. This isn't the old HK. He gave us some insight into the new Marine IAR weapon, HK's new military contracts for that and with the Navy for some handguns... big contracts that would have meant HK could have avoided the whole Civilian market if they wanted to. But that's not the case. In fact, we are going to be seeing some new stuff that would have been previously unheard of... such as a very real possibility of a revamped XM-8 - for Civilian Sales. Which would be outstanding. No, I didn't win the P30. That's okay. I want to buy one now. HK really impressed me.

I have to say, that's never something I expected to hear you (or anyone else who's a fan of that motto) say.

What did the President have to say? Are they going to improve their customer service? Their attitude towards the civilian market? Their products? I'm all ears, and I imagine a lot of other people are curious too.

I know, I'm still in disbelief about it.  I'm having a hard time thinking of H&K as anything but the "Evil Empire."  I'm going to need time....and LOTS of proof that they have in fact changed.

    I'm just sitting here laughing.

What excuse are the H und K fanboys going to come up with for not having teh new uber-rifelz from HK now that they'll be available to civies? "I still live in mom's basement and the $7/hr at the quickie-mart won't pay for it" doesn't sound very tacticool to me.

Honestly George I believe the experience you had, BUT I don't believe they've changed.  Not until they release their new Rifles with Hi Capacity Magazines and don't intentionally mod them to NOT take AR Mags.  If that happens then I'll think about them.  But till they really PROVE themselves nothing has changed.

Did the President of H&K (I know, I'm not very tacticool  :'( ) actually use the phrase "HK:  Because you suck, and we hate you" ?   I'd honestly be surprised if they were aware of their unofficial but near universal slogan.  That'd mean they actually were aware of their reputation, which is unlikely considering their historical lack of touch with reality.

I'll be shocked the day when they actually care about putting out a quality product for a reasonable price with reasonable customer service.  They seem to have made it their business strategy to sell the false sense of elitism.  But if that day comes, I will break down and buy an H&K product.  Until that day, H&K hates me, because I suck.

Rev I bet you ten to one that he may not have used that exact phrase, but I bet just with what I know about marketing and consumer exploration that they are VERY aware of their reputation and thats what they meant when they were talking about it.

But their civvie marketing is based on slapping their customer in the face and telling the customer they deserved it, not to ask for feedback on how to improve their customer service or products.  I'd love to know if H&K actually does actual market research, and if they intentionally went with their current strategy.

Edit:  And I accept your bet.  I'll wager ten cents he used the phrase.  Get ready to pay up!

I don't think they've known or cared until recently.  Just as they've started to try and expand sales in the US after some contracts have come up and they want to make sure they don't end up with any campaigns against them regarding the troops or certain depts not having the best equipment.

From what I've read about the new H&KUSA president is that he is actually a gun guy, the problems arise for 2 reason, stupid American import laws and H&K Germany.

I asked him about that phrase... here is what I found out:  Todd from Pistol-Training.com wanted him to use the Phrase, and they talked about using that to open up the meeting - but he didn't use it.  He was very professional.  He was very open and genuine.  The fact that they had this meeting at all shows HK is making a big effort.

Don't worry NC - thats been standard since Die Hard!  lol.

Like I said George, I'd love to see them get better, but until I see actual progress I'm hopeful but pessimistic.

It will be.  Because this was an honest effort and the big start is change in their customer service department first and foremost - and those changes have already been made.  I talked with a guy at SHOT who had called customer service before SHOT - HK was actually, nice, helpful, and prompt.

Honestly, the USP-45 fits my hand pretty well.  The high bore axis doesn't bother me because I'm a revolver guy anyway.  Too pricey for me, though.  I could get an M&P .45 for cheaper if I wanted a poly-framed .45 (though honestly I prefer hammer fired guns).

I'll just say, judging from your FB pictures, it looks like you had a good time with the HK president.  Is he new or something?  Why do they want to change their image all of a sudden?

Because they've been some of the biggest douche bags in the firearms industry since the 1990s at least.  Especially to non-government customers.

HK: Because you suck, and we hate you.

I'm very happy that they're attempting to turn things around.  They currently produce exactly one firearm that I'd have any interest in at all (the .308 cal HK 417), but more power to them.

    ...

Two possible explanations.   Either George has been kidnapped or brainwashed/drugged.

We need someone nearby to identify whether it's George or an impostor from H&K Marketing.  If we confirm it is an impostor, we'll need to organize a counterattack against H&K to liberate George.  It's unlikely they'd off him this quickly.  If they have, well, we'll even the score.

If George has not been kidnapped, we need to deprogram him.  I'm open to suggestions on the best way of doing so.   It's either waterboarding or duct taping him to a shooting bench with real firearms.

Obviously, no monetary bets can be settled until we get to the bottom of this situation!
