How do I get Mad Ogre paid when I buy Tetra?
« on: August 21, 2009, 07:04:29 pm »
I was convinced by MO's review of Tetra spray clean and lubricant, 7-31-09.  But when I click the Brownell's link, and search for this product, I can't find it.  Suggestions on how to get The Ogre some scratch for his free review?

I was going to say to order it through Brownell's by clicking the link on his site, just like you tried. But it doesn't look like Brownell's carries it anymore.  :(

Don't worry about it, man.  Its all good.  Just get it where you can.
And if you really want to tip me... I take PayPal directly...
Tetra has a gun cleaning kit you can buy, and it's pretty good.  But the Tetra Oil and the Cleaning Lubing Spray are the two products that stand out to me.
For a straight up Lube, I like Tetra's Oil.
For a straight up Cleaner, I like the MPRO-7 Cleaner.
I liked the Hornady One shot as a spray cleaner/lube... but the Tetra version is much slicker and cleans better too.

I wish I could find 1 product that does everything as well as the individual products - but it doesn't exist.

    No Hoppes #9?

I thought that was like the 870 of cleaners...

    Hoppes is caustic.

I'm a fan of M-Pro7 CLP for cleaning.  I witnessed Tetra in action in Utah and am convinced of its usefulness.

Oh, it is... it is... but try this... get two guns that are the same.  Shoot the same number of rounds through each.
Spray on Hoppes #9 on one, and wipe off the parts with one gun... and MPRO-7 Cleaner with the other gun.  See which results you like better.
Now, if a gun is really gummed up and crusty... I'll still nail that with Hoppes, soak it, and let it set for about 2 hours.  Let that solvent work slow.

I used to use Tetra, and still have some around.  A few years a go I completely cleaned/lubed my 1911 and used the grease on the slide rails and contact points.  Recently I took the gun out and had difficulty cycling the slide.  It was partially frozen.  I think that it was the grease.... (and I should probably shoot the 1911 more often).

Currently I use Hoppes Semi Auto cleaner for cleaning, Weapon Shield for general protection and lube, and Militec1 grease on the slide and contact points.  So far so good.

Yeah, because not taking care of it for a couple of years has nothing to do with it?   Come on.  And you didn't use the oil, you used grease.  Any grease could have had the same results given the same conditions.

I try out different lubes all the time... Tetra's synthetic oil is the slickest I've tested.  Simple as that.

I recently used Hoppe's Elite in my C3.  It's pretty slick.  Gun shot well enough with it.  But then when I opened her up again to clean it... the oil residue was green.  It turned my SIG C3 green.  It all cleaned off just fine with MPRO7 cleaner.  This time I lubed it up with Tetra.  It feels slicker, it really does... and it wont turn green either.

Once after cleaning a Garand bore with Hoppes #9, the patches started to come out blue.  Was this because of the copper?

Yeah.  And if you used a brass cleaning brush (or any brass utensil; rod, jag, Boresnake, ect.), it's that too.  Throw the brush away.

We did not use the brass cleaning brush as it wouldn't even fit in the damn bore.  It got stuck at first and so we just yanked it out before it got worse.  But I think my friend has a boresnake now...

    Hoppes melts copper/brass/bronze.  Use caution.

    George:

I see your point.... but just because I haven't shot it in a couple of years doesn't mean that it was stored "improperly".   ;)  This gun was lubed for "medium term storage".  I keep all my guns in a climate controlled area and most of them in butterfly pouches.  I don't shoot most of them very much as I want to keep my muscle memory sharp for my duty gun with a "LEM" trigger.

When I run out of Militec 1 grease I plan to use my remaining Tetra grease in guns that I shoot regularly.  ;D

If you want a REALLY awesome grease... Brownells (you can get it off my link!) Action Lube Plus is the slickest grease I've ever used.  Slicker than Militech, Tetra, Hoppes, everything.  It's Uber-Slick stuff.  It's a black Moly grease and looks filthy as hell, but there is nothing slicker.  I use it in Marlin lever actions, shotguns, and any other gun that is enclosed and you can't see the grease.   I tried it on my 1911's and they ran great... just looked nasty.
When I was working on ATM machines for awhile, instead of the recommended White Lithium grease - I used that stuff.  I NEVER had to go back to the same ATM twice... like I sometimes had to do when using the lithium.

I'm a big fan of white lithium grease... for pretty much everything you can imagine needing lube.  And this stuff is better you say?

    :hmm

There are about a dozen ATM's in Richmond that testify.  And I've yet to see it harden like I've seen other greases... including White Lithium - which caused the problems in the ATM's to start with.

Clumping up over time and mild hardening is one thing about WLG I find less than satisfying.

Gundoctor once told me about this stuff called RIG grease.  Where does this one lie on the scale?

I'll put it on my "got to try" list - and I get a discount at Brownells too! :clap
