Story Contest Submission: Bad azz deer.
« on: November 13, 2009, 07:39:27 pm »
Well. Hadn't been gonna submit, but was mounting the horns on a board today, and figured I should mention this one  ;D

About 4 years ago we (Me, and dad with deer tags, mom with a cow elk tag)were hunting in the Missouri River Breaks.

Well we were a little late getting there, and our first "Usual" spots we go to had hunters, so we ended up driving the road at a time later than normal.

We were going along one stretch of road and what else but a Mule Deer doe runs across the road, buck in toe, hot on her tail.   We watched him as he crossed, and I (Finally) decided I'd take him.  Hopped out and followed to where I could see him. Sure enough there he was following the doe, puckering his lips and all that stuff (In other worse acting like a moron).   I got him in the scope. The .270 shot and he dropped like a rock.

We gutted him real quick and hauled him back to the pickup and threw him in the back and drove on to anotehr spot.

Well we had no luck with elk that trip (Our normal spots were flooded with people, and walking was useless as every other ridge had a person on it.   The first year the Montana FWP in their infinite wisdom issued THIRTEEN HUNDRED cow tags.   Best success's that year were picking a spot, sitting there and usually someone would run them by).

Leastways, we got home hung him up and started skinning him....

He had TWO bullet holes in him....It was a good broadside shot I had, I hit him through the front shoulders, and there was a second (entrance and exit) hole right behind his ribcage.

Thinking back, earlier that morning we'd been glassing some spots, and there had been a flurry of shots up the road, about where he was.

Figured it must have been those shots that hit him, it wouldn't have been nothing but guts, so it wouldn't have been a even quick kill.       Figured he must have been running on the adrenaline, and the Rut seems to make them ignore stuff like that :D

At the time I had two thoughts:
#1.   I'm glad no one came up and said "Umm. I already shot him". we would have said he was a bald-faced liar.
#2.   Pretty tough deer ;D  Be running around with love on his mind after getting a gutshot.

Umm how do I put this delicately...

Horny animals can do amazing things when they are chasing tail.   :rotfl
