Moving hay bales to let the rat terriers have at the rats and mice is always a blast. It was fun at 8 years old, and it is still fun at 40. The only dog hunting that feels more pure than terriers after a rat is coyote hunting with greyhounds. Greyhounds at full tilt after a coyote on an open wheat field is pure beauty in motion.

Good one.  Thanks for sharing.    :cool

We had all sorts of vermin on the farm and too few dogs capable of making a dent in the population.  The barn cats helped some but when you've put up the hay and have a corn crib full you're going to have rodents.  Raccoon traps, skunk traps, mole traps, rat traps, mouse traps - all in use.  Ground hogs were easy pickings to a farm kid with a .22 rifle.   A sulfur candle did for a lot of stuff unlikely to offer a target without leaving a poisoned carcass around for scavengers to die slowly from.  It was hard to keep the foxes and weasels out of the hen house but at least we didn't have a coyote population to deal with back then.
