    In Ohio straight walled cartridges were just legalized for hunting...lever actions in .357, .44 and .45-70 have been selling like hotcakes...and yes .357 with the right bullet out of a carbine will humanely take a deer if used right

    ^^^^^  Yep.

    A correctly chosen 158 grain or heavier load will take deer very nicely.  Even big mulies out here where I live.

    The Boss (aka SWMBO) loves her little Rossi Trapper in .357 Mag.  It eats anything you care to feed it, is an exercise in one-hole-ology out to 50+ yards, and has taken several deer and hogs without muss or fuss.

    Granted, the deer down here usually weigh under 150 lbs, and the hogs the same, but it does seem to work very well.

    Just don't everyone get to thinking the 357 lever action is a 30-30.  It isn't.

    With the differences in the sectional density numbers between what the 2 cartridges offer, as well as the differences in projectile construction, they really are 2 different animals.

    True.  That said, at 75-100 yards the difference between them is largely academic - especially from the standpoint of the dead deer.   :cool   At 150 yards I'll take the 30-30 every time.
