The new Ruger ammo. Anybody shoot it yet?
« on: October 28, 2015, 03:52:28 pm »
I'm interested but haven't ponied up the dough for a box of 45 or 380. Before I do, I'm wondering if it's a gimmick round similar to the R.I.P. foolishness. What's the consensus so far?

The gel tests look nasty.  According to the manufacturer even though the projectile does not deform or expand the hydrostatic forces from the bullet design create a nasty wound cavity.  There is an article on it in the latest issue of American Rifleman.

I'll reserve judgement until it has been around a little while longer.

Just read the write up sounds good. The single use no reload cases that Polycase is apparently originally famous for was something else, (give the reloader in me the shivers), but the new ammo looks quite interesting. Should even be legal in New Jersey...until after tomorrow when Christie bans it. ;)

I agree. There are a few designs like this. They have all been shown to be pretty much functionally similar to a plain ole flat nose only cost much more.

Precisely.   And designs like this can be deflected by bone or branch a lot more.

I think a tumbling design could show some promise. That was one of the wounding ideas behind the fn 5.7 I believe.

I think a pistol round designed along the premise of the 5.45 rounds with their lead core that slips inside a steel jacket to upset the bullet on impact. It might allow a smaller caliber to 'hit' above its weight class.

The videos look good. There must be something to it if Ruger stepped in and is selling it under their name.
I bought some in .45 and .380, but haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.

I thought those looked familiar.  What little I've read about Kelsey's "radially dynamic" bullet sounded good so, while I am skeptical, I am also hopeful.

I bought it at the first local store that I could find it at. $25 for 20 rounds of .45, and $22 for 25 rounds of .380.

I'll let you test it for those prices. For my money, I'll stick with proven stuff, like the Hornydaddy Critical Defense I'm carrying now. Maybe I'll look at the Ruger Wunderboolitz later.

Show me a real geltest to FBI standards and then we will talk.

Lightweight bullets like this tend to be bulls___ when it comes to real world performance...impressive looking gel shots to the uninitiated but that's about it. Surprised Ruger would go into this
