I've only ever fired one .40 S&W, a Beretta 96A1. Hated it: the recoil impulse felt extremely similar to the S&W .357 that had beat me up a few weeks earlier. However, I've since come to enjoy the hearty *thump* of the Magnum, so I'd like to try shooting the .40 again. My 9mm CZ-75 shoots so softly that it's almost boring: I suspect a .40 S&W model would be rather pleasant to shoot.

Okay, I gotta know: what two pistols are they?

FN High Power Mk III and a SIG P 250 compact version.   See?  Told ya'.    :cool

Good choices, though I must admit I am disappointed: for some reason, I'd suspected one to be a S&W 40xx series. I was kinda hoping I'd be right.

For the prices the 4006 is going for on Gunbroker, you can buy a new plastic .40 pistol.

There are a couple steel framed .40s still out there, though.  All of them are CZ and CZ clones, off the top of my head.  The CZ-75 series, the EAA Witness, and the Baby Eagle/Jericho.

    Which...now that you mention it...

    Damn.  I like that.

I tried them in every caliber but 10mm and came away .  .  .  meh.   Relatively accurate, well made, durable pistols that felt like a brick in my hand.  They also suffered the high bore axis issues that plagued SIG and S&W cheaped out on the magazine followers when they went to plastic.  The more modern M&P series is a better pistol in every way IMO as is the S&W 1911 series - which S&W devoted a great deal of effort to when they saw the direction the market was headed.  S&W never looked back and I don't plan to either.  The good news for you is they can usually be had for relatively little money so you get to try one for yourself.   :cool

I think it's history for me. Something about the older guns. The Glock is useful, but 3rd gen Smith's are interesting. The Benelli M4 may be hands down better, but the Remington 870 speaks to me. I love my TRR8, but my model 28 has history to it.

I love all guns, but some are just attractive to me.

So, in other words, we've added the .40 Short & Weak to the senseless, childish 9mm vs .45 foolishness, making it a 9mm vs .40 vs .45 drivel....Pfft.

I would readily carry the S&W 4006, SIG P229, or HK USP40, in that order, other than that, the .40 S&W has zero allure for me.

I like the looks of the X5.  Really want one, but in 9mm.  Hard for me to justify the price though.

To the subject, never shot a .40sw.  Never owned one, yet, likely will someday.  No objections to it, just no reasons to.  Other than caliber conversions, have thought off and on for years about getting a .357 Sig or a .40 s&w and adding other barrels to play with.  Right now and for the foreseeable future, I don't need any more calibers to reload for.

I carried Glock 22s and 23s for years. I shot expert with them.  The recoil to me is snappy with the 40 it isn't brutal. It wasn't until I went to full time SWAT and started shooting 400 rounds a day that I got real tired of the 40. My middle finger knuckle ached after a day at the range. I went to 9mm in the Glocks and I've never looked back. I've never felt under gunned carrying a 9.  :coffee

I've talked to the range guys. The 40 caliber Glocks have to be fixed at a much higher frequency then the 45 and then the 9s. IIRC it was guessed 85-90% 40. 45 Glocks around 10 % and the 17 and 19s rarely broke parts.

Before we went to Glocks we issued boat anchor S&Ws in 40 that broke all the time. As in broken that you better throw the gun and run. They were absolutely POS. Fortunately I carried a SIG then and was grandfathered in so I never had to carry one.

I beat the FBI in going to a 9 by 12 years or so.  :rotfl

That is one thing I've heard, that .40, being a bigger, high pressure round stuffed into smaller framed guns, tends to batter them and wear them out faster.  It's an issue that 10mm usually avoided by being chambered in a bigger gun.

People who say that tend to be unaware that the SAAMI pressure limit for .40 S&W is identical to the limit for 9mm.

It's bigger and more powerful and does put a bit more strain on a pistol, but pressure has nothing to do with it.

Same goes for issues of relative "snappiness" between .40 and 9mm.

I never cared for the .40

I have all of my carry guns in 9mm and .45

Since our department has went to the gen4 Glock, we have experienced a much higher failure rate than we had previously

The locking block pins are walking out and we are breaking a significant number of slide stop springs (around 10%)

I started with .40 as my first pistol caliber. Now I have so much ammo stocked up, I'm in for the long haul. My favorite pistol is my 1911 though and it only eats .45, so that sucks. Maybe I can convince the Mrs. that I need a 1911 in .40 or all of that ammo will just sit there and be a waste of money...
