Picked up my LAR Grizzly 45 Win Mag Big Bore
« on: October 30, 2015, 01:07:36 am »
It turns out that I had some stuff sitting idle in my safe that had some value and I ended up getting enough to pick up my layaway, a "shooter-grade" Mark I LAR Grizzly in .45 Winchester Magnum caliber.  I bought one from the same shop around 12-13 years ago (5" barrel version) that was in better cosmetic condition but I ended up selling it to a good friend because I desperately needed $$ at the time but regretted that sale pretty much ever since.  I've been half hearted looking for another one and since I still had the reloading dies & 250 or so rounds of brand new Star Line brass it made things a bit easier in the back of my mind to actually pick one up.

This guy was on sale for almost 2 months but due to the non-availability of the ammo even the 799.00 price  tag wasn't enough to grab anyone else's attention other than a curious fondle.  He definitely isn't the prettiest as it looks like a previous owner kept it in a cheap pistol rug or had it wrapped in a semi damp t-shirt by the looks of the finish wear but to me it ensures that it won't become a safe queen and I'll actually shoot it or even hunt with it and not worry about messing anything up.  I personally like the .45WM round as it's close to .44 Magnum power in an automatic that isn't fired out of a Desert Eagle, even though the 'roided out 1911 frame & slide is a bit bulky but isn't no where near the mass of the enormous DE.

I've got some rounds loaded up that are on the mild side (Hornady 250gr XTP over 19.0gr AA#9) and will have to do until I order some more projectiles after payday.  I just finished up stripping it down completely followed by a bath & lube and thought a few pictures were in order.  I also did the white lettering as personally I do like the contrast with the markings and since the finish is kinda beat I made sure that the white fill wasn't perfect and made it look like it should belong there.  Tomorrow will see some range time after a morning appointment to the pain clinic to keep me functional...God I hate that monkey on my back, but that's another story.

You can kinda get an idea how wide it is, but it's actually pretty comfortable...it IS a 1911 after all.

A small line up of ammo to get an idea of what a .45WM round looks like compared to something familiar.  L-R .45ACP 230gr XTP, .45 WM 250gr XTP & .44 Magnum 240gr XTP

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

I managed to get a decent 5 pointer with it the other day.  51 yard shot right at day break.  I'm really digging this pistol!
