So I'm local(ish) to Green Top Hunting/Fishing store.

They got in a large lot of Police trade-ins of Smith&Wesson M&P 9mm.  I got a really great price.

Single action, striker fired, no safety, no de-cocker.



It is a nice gun.  I like the interchangeable grip option.  but.

I'm thinking of open carry, with an OWB holster.  But I like the safety/decocker option on my old Ruger P89.

I'm told these M&P 9s are very customizable, and there is a "civilian" version that does have a safety/decocker.

Is it possible to put a safety/decocker on a Police model like mine?

Also: what do you suggest for attachments/options?  Thanks.

How much?   I picked up a trade-in M&P 40 last year for $300 that looked brand new.    Local shop was selling them, and I figured I couldn't go wrong at that price and I needed something in .40.  I've got an Apex trigger for it too, but I haven't bothered putting it in yet.   

Also bought my father in law one for his birthday/father's day present since the price was right and he'd helped my wife out on some car repairs around the same time.     

At Christmas 2019, they probably were $300.  They're currently selling for $430-450.  I got mine for $400.

Again, mine is the LE version.  No thumb decock/safety.

There is a notch in the frame where one would go. 

But the sales guy didn't know if putting one in is possible, and the store was crazy busy.

I've left messages at a couple different gunsmiths; am waiting for answers.

If I remember correctly the model with the safety was the "LE" model and the "normal" model was the one without the thumb safety.

I think the thumb safety model may have been more "government" than "LE".  Because the Army has a thing for thumb safeties.  Witness the M-17 version of the Sig P320.

Given the dominance of Glocks in the LE market, and of DA revolvers before that, I think it's safe to say that LE agencies aren't as insistent on thumb safeties as the Army.
