New Glock 20 Gen 4
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:07:10 am »
Just got a new .gov job with this sweet black gun as my sidearm.  Kinda hush-hush on the details, I can't even tell my family what I do or where I go sometimes, just gotta remember to not bring home any gov issued blue jackets.

.Gov issuing a dime bore? Sweet!

I would tolerate being issued Tupperware if it was a 10mm.

I support the .gov's choice in issued equipment :thumbup1.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.
Ray Chapman, used to say that the 125-grain Magnum load’s almost magical stopping power was the only reason to load .357 instead of .38 Special +P ammunition into a fighting revolver chambered for the Magnum round. I agree. - Massad Ayoob

Sorry, didn't prep the joke right, needed a  ;) after the initial post.  The only .gov I know that issues 10mm is MCB, hence the Winchester Silvertips (pic didn't come out that great, cheap old camera).  I don't have a .gov job, just a private security gig (but my job was mentioned in the Uprising series).

I really wanted a 10mm, bought a bunch of HPs a few months ago, and finally bought the gun two weeks ago (I love the blue label program).  Seems like all the 10mm ammo I shot was medium to high powered (Underwood TMJ, Doubletap HP, Winchester Silvertip, Hornady JHP), except for some Black Hills 180gr, felt like a .40.

I shot my real duty gun, Sig P226 TacOps 9mm after the Glock, felt like I was shooting a .22.  I will get flak at work for owning a Glock since I am one of the few that still carry Sigs, most other officers have 19s, some have 17s.  I wish we got to carry the 20, I really love this gun, and the Gen 4 recoil spring makes it feel like a .45, just more snappy then pushy on the recoil.

Very nice.  Now that I know you're local, we'll have to go out some time and shoot it.

I really did work for the .gov and was issued an H&K MP5 chambered in 10mm. The selector switch went from safe, semi, two round burst and full auto. The two round burst was  :D. I had to return the MP5 when I transferred but it was my inspiration to buy the Glock 20.

Nice Glock. If I ever pony up the dough for a 10mm, that's the one I want.  :thumbup1

I know of one in Norway who deals with Polar Bears that uses a Glock 20.  Polar Bears = 10mm to the Vikings.

I have got the 21 gen4 and while it's still a big grip.. That small reduction that you get without any backstraps attached really does help manage these bigger Blocks a bit

The Danish SF that operate in the Artic circle and Greenland are issued G20s, for animal protection and in case they have to take long prone or supported pistol shots against Russians. The older issue pistol was the SIG P210, I think the G20 has been issued since late 90's? Either way, be it P210 or G20, those cats get classy sidearms!

Polar bears would be impressive.  Though here's an account of a hunter taking a brown/grizzly bear with a G20 and DT.

    http://www.westernshooter.com/2011/02/bear-hunt-with-a-glock-20-10mm.html

"The bullet had broken the bears shoulder and exited through the other side."

"I had carried it all over the mountains for months and never cleaned, oiled or unloaded it. After shooting the bear I checked it out and it was full of grit, pine needles, and mountain debris but still functioned perfectly..."

    Coupla thoughts ...

    200gr solid, 1300 FPS. Ouch.

Not cleaning your gun after hauling it around for weeks in the brush ... hard to argue with success, but, still.

"The bullet impact knocked the bear back, killing him." No, it did not.

Note that the bear was killed in one shot (assuming his evaluation of the wound is correct), but it took two more shots to stop him. "Bear defense" is probably going to be a multiple-dose type affair with a 10mm. Good thing you have 16 rounds on tap (15 if you're this guy ... and no reloads).

This can be amended to say, Bear defense with a hand gun is a multiple - dose type affair.
I like the 10mm for bear defense with proper ammo, and reloads.  I carry my gen 3 sf G20 with reloads, usually 2 spare mags.  I carry 180 hard cast at about 1200 fps, or 200 fmj at about the same.  I don't feel under gunned when I carry my Kimber 10mm, I just up the mag count to three.
