This one holds seven, but is otherwise just about perfect. A trip to a gunsmith to switch out the front sight would be all I need.

For a EDC gun? Model 19. This is what the gun was built for. Yes it will not survive a heavy diet of hot mag loads, but what is that number? IIRC it is somewhere north of 10,000 125 gr loads. The gun was asked for by officers who wanted 38spc size for carry, but .357 mag for performance, with 6 shots.

They can go 10,000k rounds? Did not know that. Well then, a Model 19 or 66 it is. I have only one firearm that I have put more that 1k through, one at about 800, and then one at about 500. (The 500 is on safe duty, and so will never reach 1000.)

Seeing as I will never even come close to 10,000k of magnums, I may as well get the lighter model. Even if I do wear it out, that would cost over $4k with cheap ammo - 5x the cost of the gun. It would not be unreasonable to replace the weapon.

I am unsure of the exact number. But it was a high round count unless you shoot hot rounds for competition, or training.
SLM might know better. But your not going to break a K frame with a case of factory 125 gr loads.

This article covers what I have heard and understand to be true. As with anything do your own research and make up your own mind. But I would much rather carry a model 19 EDC than a 586. A 66 with a 3" barrel if such a thing exists might be better though.

Fortunately for you, those are way overpriced. No way am I going to spend $1500 for a 3" model, when a serviceable 2-1/2" specimen can be had for half of that.

At this point, I am really conflicted. I like the idea of the 19/66. I like the way they look, and the reduced weight, when compared to the 686. They are also the definition of oldschool badass. Buuut... The 686 is more modern, and it exists for a reason. It can handle a steady diet of the full power magnums, which is eating at me more and more, when I think of the Model 19. Also, as I plan to carry stout magnums, the increased weight can be argued as a good thing...

Fortunately for me, I have time to consider, because I just don't know.

Guys, I appreciate all of the insight and suggestions. As I said in the OP, this is still in the exploratory phase.

At this point the frontrunner is a S&W 686. Probably a 7-shot, just so I can get the 3" barrel with the full ejector rod. I may swing back around to a Model 19/66 by the time the actual purchase happens, but the 686 leads right now.

Ruger is out, that I do know. All models and variations.

If I didn't need proof you're not a nerd...

The first, with the lipstick, is from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. *CLASSIC* camp sci-fi musical movie, with Susan Sarandon & Meatloaf. Widely renowned for audience participation lines at midnight showings (which, really, is how it's best... experienced). Tim Curry is Dr. Frankenfurter, and that is all the warning you'll get on that movie. Must be seen to be believed. Soo bad it's utterly fantastic.

The second is from Legend, an incredibly well-done fantasy/fairy tale done by Ridley Scott, with Tom Cruise, and Mia Sara. Tim Curry steals the movie as The Darkness, who has sent ghouls to kill the last two unicorns, and send the world into eternal night. As you can tell, his costume and makeup are *incredible*. Has some small bits in it that disturb the suspension of disbelief, but other'n that, it's well worth watching. Bonus: one of the songs in the soundtrack was recently retread for the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack (the American one, which was actually quite well done - I'm disappointed they're not finishing the trilogy with that cast, instead of rebooting it).

For what it's worth, I had a 686-3 (albeit with a 4" barrel), that was a great shooter. Six-shot, and didn't have that stupid lock (damn lawyers!). Really liked that gun. I hated having to unload it earlier this summer! If you could find one in the barrel length you're looking for, I don't think you could go wrong.

The lock does not bother me. The hammer-mounted firing pin would be nice.

I've had to replace both a hammer mounted FP and a frame mounted FP....The frame mounted FP was far easier to replace, takes 5-10 min. The hammer mounted FP has two ways, replace the entire hammer (and have to get a gunsmith to polish the contact surfaces so you get the trigger pull you want) or you drill out the firing pin retaining pin and get the proper tools to replace and swage in place the new retaining pin...both equal pains in the ass.
I absolutely prefer the frame mounted FP and think S&W hit a home run on this engineering change.
