Front sight options for handguns
« on: November 21, 2015, 07:54:56 pm »
I know fiber optic sights are en vogue but tritiums are still popular and then there's the gold bead. Some people swear by them. I've never actually handled a pistol or revolver that had a gold bead inset to the front. Are they really that good/easy to pick up?

Thinking about trying it for my Delta Elite. What are your thoughts? Still better off with tritium or FO?

It's going to be coupled with a 10-8 Performance rear sight.

I can't say that I've shot a gun with a gold bead, but I have handled one in the store...  If it tells you anything, I asked to handle it because my eye was caught by that tiny little speck of gold, as it sat in the case.  Yes, it draws the eye.  Much more so than a brass bead.  No comparison.

This one's bead looks decently large. I'm liking it more and more.

Gold beads actually work quite well, and are a better option than brass beads.

Agreed.  If there is any daylight at all you can usually see a gold bead without any problem.

I had a gold bead on one of my S&Ws.  I loved it, personally.  It works better in dim light than a fiber optic, in my opinion.

Gold beads are quite effective. I have one on my 9x23 1911 rig for hunting. It works all the way to legal shooting light or slightly beyond.

They are outclassed by true night sights of course, but I really think they are the next best thing. They work better for me than any fiber optic front I have tried for low light shooting.

I've got one on my GP-100 Wiley Clapp and I love it. One is going on my Hi-Power when it goes to Don Williams for some upgrades.

I wish someone made a gold bead for the GP100.

I know some thought they were "gimmicky",  but I'm still running Speed Sights for the front sights on my Glocks.

    http://speedsights.com/night-sights

I really like them,  very fast to pick up,  very easy to see, especially with my out of warranty (56 year old) eyes.

options include color and insert night sight or not.  I currently use the Bright Lime (lime green) with Tritium night site.

Frankly,  it beats Every other front sight I've ever tried, including the kits and fiber optics.

I have a Williams gold thin flat faced front iron sight on one of my rifles, a single shot that has a Williams receiver rear sight.   The front sight is like a round bead, but the face is flat, if that makes any sense.  That post really "pops" in low light when looking through the peep.  Really fast.   I like it much and have never thought of going with something different on it.  I think it is actually brass, though.  I have to polish it a little from time to time to keep is bright.

    Looks like this:

On my Glock 22 I use Trijicon tritium green three dot sights and they seem to work fine.  I've never really thought about that transition stage between good visibility of the white circle around each lamp and dark enough for the lamps to be effective though.  Something to ponder.

Thanks guys! I actually think I'm gonna "go for the gold" on my Delta.

Okay, that was really bad. I demand that you punch me in the gut if we ever meet. I deserve it.

Either 10-8 Performance or if Wilson.
