EAA Witness advice...
« on: December 12, 2016, 10:39:47 am »
So I've been watching the Blu-Ray set of Miami Vice my wife got me. Now I've got the hankering for a Bren Ten. Well, the Witness series looks close enough to me.

Researching them I've only found a few reviews. The only one dealing with the steel frame versions is one by the Ogre a while back.

Anyone have any experience with them? It's not going to be anything but a range toy.

I have a 10mm.   Good gun, very accurate and the magazines are cheap.   It is quite large and a little bulky, but that isn't a huge issue if you are not going to carry it a lot.

My stepfather has the .45... great gun, but yeah, you need sizable mitts for it to be comfortable in the hand.

I've still never found out what exactly the EAA "WONDER FINISH" really is.  I remain curious to a degree.
The gun it's self was great.  Stout, yes.  But it handled recoil remarkably well.  And once I found ammo that it liked, it was very reliable.
I did buy the gun from EAA, and had it for awhile before I sold it.

Preciate the replies. I found a LNIB full size with the Wonderfinish but it's in 38 Super. But seeing as I can get a 10mm conversion, I'm kinda interested. Hard to argue with 17 +1 of 38 Super.

I have two EAA Witness Guns.  I have a full-size wonder finish 10mm that I refinished in black cerakote, and I have an Elite Match, also 10mm.

They are great guns.  They handle any 10mm load with ease.  The fit the hand well, and are easy to shoot accurately.  The Elite Match especially is very accurate.

I also have a 38 super conversion barrel and magazine for the Elite Match.  The barrel took about 5 minutes total to fit to the gun.  The barrel comes with a little nub on the back of the hood, which you file down until it just goes into battery.  The gun is very easy to manage in 38 Super.  And, the barrels are not terribly expensive.

However, full conversion kits are terribly expensive IMHO at $400.  This compared to about $500-$600 for a new gun.  If you can convert from 38 super to 10mm running the same slide, I would get the 38 Super and add a 10mm barrel, not the full conversion kit.  Otherwise I would say hold out for a 10mm Witness and add the 38 super barrel and mag.  I can confirm that shoots really well.

Depending on you intended use, the Elite Match is a very worthy upgrade for usually about $100 more.  But, it has many sharp edges and the slide finish is more like a presentation finish than something that will actually resist moisture and abrasion from daily carry.  Were I going to carry this model I would plan on a melt and a refinish to something more durable. For a range gun, it is a delight, same as a home defense gun.  For carry, get the base model with the wonder finish, or one of the Elite Stock models, I favor the Stock I.

I dunno about that.   My wife, all 5ft 99lbs of her with itty bitty hands, asked me to replace her G19 with a Full Sized Witness in 10mm after she shot mine.
(Here's a picture of her the day she picked her's up from the LGS.*)

I don't suppose there's a list somewhere of which caliber swaps can be done with just a barrel change vs those that need to swap a slide as well?
I'm also wondering which (if any) mags can be reliably used for other calibers (.38 super in a 9mm mag?  .45acp in a 10mm mag? ect).

While I really love this platform it's not exactly the easiest one to research.

There was a website with that info, but I don't know if it is still active.  I have it bookmarked on my PC at home.

I will dig it up tonight. Might have to access it through the Internet archive. Last time I looked at it, it hadn't been updated for a few years.

Found the website.  It's a somewhat poorly organized blog so there will be some more Witness info scattered throughout the site instead of just on that page.   I don't think the sales links on there are active any more.
