Para Ord extractor question
« on: May 20, 2014, 01:47:14 am »
Does any one know if the PXT extractor in a Para LDA comes out like a standard 1911?  I got this one in a trade, and all my LDA stuff is in storage 400 miles away.  Also my other LDA is standard extractor not the over sized one the were/still doing.  I am over on my band with usage so utube is a couple of days away.  Thanks.

I would think that you could remove it like on a regular 1911 with the only difference might be a firing pin block but that's still easy.  If you can't push the firing pin in far enough to slide the retainer plate down just look for a small plunger on the bottom of the slide inline with the firing pin.  Push & hold in the plunger and then push in the firing pin, remove the retainer plate and then remove the extractor.  The firing pin may lock in the slide so to get it out just push in the firing pin lock plunger and it should spring out from the return spring pressure.

I ordered a new extractor, and recoil spring last night from Para.  They only ship FedEx so it is going to my sister and then mailed from MN.  Saved $50 on shipping by having it go to her.  They are the only source I could find with the PXT extractor.

Tonight I pulled out the extractor, and it looks like it was painted.  Black that came off with Hoppe's #9 and a fingernail.  So I cleaned it up to bright stainless and lubed the spring portion with Slipstream and reassembled.

I did not take a picture, but it sure looks to me, like the firing pin safety is missing.  The firing pin has a notch and their is a hole in the slide for on but nothing in it.  So I am off to the Para site to see if I can find a manual for it and figure out if I am missing parts.  I know that it was gone when I got the gun.  Oh well I guess that is what I get for having my dad help me out on a trade when he know very little about semi-autos.

You really don't need that firing pin block safety as that started out as an anti-lawsuit device to make a safe gun even more safe.  The 1911 design has been successful for decades without it and you can still buy pistols without them.  They alter the trigger pull (the cam action adds some extra resistance) and if any debris like unburnt powder or even brass/copper shaving could jam the plunger rendering the pistol inoperable.  It's up to you and it's not required and you are free to modify your firearm in any way you please so you aren't breaking any "safety" laws for not having it.

It fired fine with out it.  I am sure it is unrelated to jam issue.  I bought the gun site unseen, and was told it was all there and work done on it, the paint job, was done by a competent person.  The owner at the time had no idea that the parts were missing, and was sure they were there before the paint job.  For $11 I am buying them, so that I can put it in original condition, if I want.

Well I got around to test firing the gun yesterday.  It functioned better with the extractor cleaned up and the pivot cleaned up and lubed.  That PXT extractor is a funky deal.  I only had one failure to extract out of about 100 rounds.  I need to load up a bunch more .45 acp and get my dad to send me a care package.  And for the extractor that I am paying for shipping on twice to show up.

With Para now owned by Remington  :banghead I am thinking hard about buying a bunch of LDA parts to have on hand just in case.
