Title: Got my CETME back after having a brass deflector welded on...a "little" issue..
Post by: huey148 on September 12, 2011, 01:55:06 pm
OK, got my receiver back from the welders on Friday after having the brass deflector permanently put on in order to avoid knocking someone unconscious by the brass ejecting at close the speed of sound directly to the guns 3 o'clock....looks like a good weld job and he even surprised my by painting it a flat green color which will look pretty good when matched with black furniture, but there was one little problem.....it doesn't work.

Apparently the upper receiver was probably viced to be worked on and now the bolt group hangs up in it instead of going forward to seat a round.  That's not good.  Not going after the welder here, I mean I took the thing to a welder and not a gunsmith for crying out loud.  I called the welder and he is going to take a look at it with me later this week.  The nice thing about this goof is its making me take a good hard look at the rifle and how it works.

More info later, this will work out though....

Well, that's not good.  Is there anything that you can see when eyeballing it down the side or on the inside of the receiver?  Have you tried to see if the carrier by itself (bolt removed) will travel freely?  There are ways to isolate where the problem may be...if I had it in front of me then I would be able to tell you exactly what's wrong with her.

Heat from welding may have warped the dust cover around the ejection port.  That is particularly possible if it was welded free standing without using heat sinks.

eyeballing it it looks fine, removing the "head" or forward portion of the bolt actually makes the extractor pop out which makes it stick at the end of the tube.  Warping or shrinking is a possibility.  I think if he can just bend it back a bit it will be find.

But yeah, big D'oh!

The "head" is actually the bolt assembly and the "extractor" is the bolt lock...I'm surprised that it sticks out that much when the bolt is removed to prevent the carrier from going into the receiver as when the bolt is seated & rollers locked, the bolt lock should be in the same position as if the bolt was removed.  I didn't think about shrinking or warping from the welding but that is more than likely the culprit.  There is a receiver straighting tool that pretty much gets hammered down the receiver to get it back into spec, but unfortunately that tool just isn't found in many gunsmith's tool boxes.  You could probably do it with a spare carrier as a last resort if you can't complete the task any other way.  Good luck and I hope you get your girl back up and running.

OK, took it back to the welder yesterday, had him spread the receiver a bit, bolt goes home but does not "slam" home like it used to...seems to lock the bolt in when it goes forward....going to use some slipstream and see if that wont smooth some issues outs.....going to test fire this weekend before asking him to do more, afraid he will spread them too far and then I am just back to another issue....looks good though....

Ah yes, CETME woes.  I'm just glad mine is up and running.  Yours looks fantastic though with the OD green.  I wish I could help, but all I can do is wish you luck.  Let us know when you've test fired it again.

The guy gave me the paint...its just Krylon camo!  Used it on the scope mount..dries in like 10 minutes!! Thinking my AR might get some attention as well....

Still can't get the damn green G3 stock to fit on there...screw it....the black looks OK and does the job, I just wanted to have a sling mount...so much for that, this will be a range queen anyway....

The guy spread the receiver with some hydrological device and I was afraid he would slip and the entire receiver would come apart....the bolt locks up but not as authoritative as before...morel like snap than a BAM when it closes..thinking maybe some slipstream on the entire op rod group for a bit might do the trick...the charging handle seems to drag a bit now...possibly from the paint...if that is the case it should wear back in after a bit...dunno....going to verify the bolt locks forward after each round to make sure it doesnt go bang out of battery on me....all of this for a damn brass deflector!! (which is visible in the pic)

Hopefully this will take a shorter amount of time to right itself than yours did!!

Sorry about the HK stock not fitting...maybe I was just lucky.  It is REALLY tight though.  Have you thought about rails?  I want rails to add a VFG just because the dang thing gets so hot after the second mag.  Just regular old Krylon camo huh?  I'm going to have to do that cuz the finish on my rifle is FUGLY.  Looks like the finish got worn down and somebody tried to cover it with a magic marker.... :facepalm

If the bolt & carrier is sluggish on its own then it might be worse once you attempt to cycle it with a full magazine as the ammo adds extra resistance.  The Krylon finish looks great and makes touchups very easy...and cheap.

well, I cycled a few training .308 rounds I bought to test magazines (only about half of the 20 G3 mags I got for a $1 each through CTD work in the CETME) and they seem to work...like I said, going to let one chamber, eject the mag and check the bolt spacing, reinsert mag and fire, repeat until I am sure that it is working...thanks for the advice guys!

And I was surprised it was Krylon too...smooth and not a flat texture at all, just not glossy...almost matches the Green handguards

I have one of the G3 handguards on now with a heat shield...going to where a pair of nomex gloves while firing as well....

Did this welder mask off your receiver properly when he painted it? If there's paint inside it, there's your problem.

I bought a Bubba'd SKS with a big ammo deal a few years ago and the dumbass had painted the bolt carrier and inside of the bolt cover. I got maybe 10 shots before it locked up and I had to use my Mosin Hammer to get the live round out of the chamber.

Then I sold it.

OK, I think its good to go now....took the scope mount off...I think that actually may of had something to do with the issues...ok, now that bolt goes forward like its supposed to..I guess this is going to be an iron site rifle after all  (maybe I will need to get a M1A or Crusader Broadsword for my .308 long range scope rifle) manually cycled that thing hundreds of time, my hand hurts from that charging lever!  And Mushashi, I even got the green butt stock on!! Oh the joys of guerrilla gunsmithing!!

Seriously, this thing is turned into on big PITA!

And it looks like the best way to zero this is to zero at 25 with the 200 setting....anyone know different?

I've been trying to figure out the iron sights myself.  It would be nice if someone on WTA was a Spanish soldier during the cold war and could really teach us about this gun.

Yes, use the 200 yard setting.    I hardly ever use the 100 yard notch on mine.

That little charging handle can beat your hand up so I would recommend swapping it for a 23E handle.  It has a nice big moulded pad on it and you get much more leverage...and I only takes about a minute to change out.  Have you checked the bolt gap?  If there's no gap then it takes extra leerage to unlock the rollers.

Where can I get that 23E handle?

OK, scope mounts off it and it seems to slam forward much better...could it actually be exerting enough force on the receiver to slow down the operating rod and group? I guess so...

Got the green stock on it...next stop, the range on Friday...

Ah...Much better with the green stock.  Recognizing all of the many flaws of the design....I still love the gun.
