What is this old optic?
« on: October 24, 2016, 08:42:15 am »
So....at our local gunshow a few weekends ago a guy brought this in and asked if anyone could identify it.  No one had a clue what it was.  Considering we're an....assorted bunch, figured I'd ask.  I'll look around for the old guy, he doesn't use a computer, and see if I can find out.

It has an eyepiece adjustment, and I think an inner lense is cocked because if you really look at hard angles into the lense, you can see an up and down line on the left hand side with numbers, like 4 through 8 or so on them.

We're clueless, maybe a land leveling device?

I'm not sure.  But I've seen similar optics on Artillery.
My Dad took me to lots of Museums as a kid... and that looks like just that sort of thing.

well that's what we all wondered, but there's absolutely no adjustments on the optic, the only "adjustment" is the eyepiece, and then a tightener that allows it to pivot.    Pivot....yeah, but there's no central marking or place to realign 100% in the exact same spot  :shrug

The adjustment would be in the mount it attaches to.  I had a guy bring something similar into Point Blank Range.  It was a sight for a Naval artillery gun.  It was very much like this unit shown, but was a bit shorter.

Did it have any markings?    We weren't sure as almost every thing of US .mil issue, even pre WW2 had a stamp. I mean they stamped their stamps with markings, and there isn't a fraction of a marking anywhere on it.

    Foreign possibly?

That's it.    My phone has a scratched photo lens and no one else wanted to go to the effort of posting them to get what it is.

I have a couple of other angles, but there's nothing else to show.  Not a marking was on it.
