That sounds awful  :-\ .
Well, it wasn't fun, but it was satisfying when it was all done.

You know, Toyota Priuses don't have tedious trailer hitch hook up problems  :neener .
Don't have "tedious trailer hook up problems" at the back end, or at the front?  I could tow a Prius with no problem.  The same can not be said about the Prius.  And if my battery needs replacing it doesn't cost $7,000 or more.

Can't tow and launch the boat with a Prius either.  Kinda hard to take the trash cans to the transfer site also.  So the wife "borrowed" my truck when she wanted to go fishing.

I'm thinking you don't really need a proper hitch if all you're rated to tow is a Radio Flyer kid's wagon .  .  .   :coffee

I was joking of course, but they are nice if you have land or work to be done.

Too bad as a city dweller, I don't think I could ever justify one. I like the smaller pick ups and have been eyeing some of the GMC line, but I feel it's a pipe dream. The vehicles and cost of gas are expensive  :shrug . Looks like I'll be stuck with sedans and cross overs. Btw, what sparked my truck curiosity is I drove one of the new Toyota Tacomas  :cool .

Those are cute little trucks.  Pretty capable for what they are but until Toyota updates the engines and transmissions I think they are going to be overshadowed by the newer domestic trucks.  Toyota seems to build pretty good off road trucks but their work truck, heavy duty, heavy towing performance keeps them off the radar for a lot of folks.

Just checked. The 2018 F150 gets 20 mpg city and 26 hwy  :shrug .

The 2018 GMC Canyon gets 22 city/30 highway and the 2018 Chevy Colorado also gets 22/30.

Are those 2wd numbers or 4x4?

A part of me wants a Canyon, but I really like having a full sized truck for work.  That said I am sick of working on vehicles that I have to have...I think I could live with an F150 for work.

My 2016 Ram 3500 Cummins gets about half that.  But lift, 35" tires, and I do actually use the full capacity of the truck.

My 2016 Colorado is averaging about 20-22, mostly back and forth to work every day, about 3/4 of which is on a freeway [8 miles total one way].  Take it on a long trip, and it bumps up to 24+, but that includes going over the mountains to the coast.  There's a long 25+ mile gradual downslope on I5 that I once averaged 38+ over 25 miles (so sayeth the truck's computer).  If I were to do a long run of 240 miles or so, say from Portland to Eugene and back, pretty flat through the Willamette Valley, it should average up around 26+.  And I can tow up to 7,000# if I need to.  I like that "if I need to" capability.  Pus, it's a crew cab, so can seat up to five adults or carry plenty of groceries.  And it sits higher than a little car, so I can see traffic ahead better when on the road.

Seeing as this has drifted into automotive stuff, anyone have recommendations for a (used) 4wd SUV with decent towing capacity, price in the $6k-9k range? This is primarily for my wife back stateside.
Looking for something that has a record of being mechanically reliable but have no earthly idea of which models are real world reliable, I've used rental cars only over the last 15 years.

Hard to find anything with decent towing capacity that isn't truck based.  $6 - $9k is another strike against finding anything with decent towing capacity as most things that are capable in that regard are going to be $10k + if there's any life left in them.

I suppose I should ask what you consider "decent towing capacity"?   :hmm

Decent towing capacity= tow another car on a dolly or 16ft travel trailer/moderately loaded ute trailer.   I've driven big trucks professionally, so I'd be a bit more cautious and baby things if I were dealing with steep grades, ect.

Definitely not looking for anything to tow heavy equipment, ect., and we're not planing on towing anything with it on a regular basis.
One thing I am considering is that I'd like to be able to pull it behind a full trailer* (pickup for the tow vehicle) and have it capable to fill in to tow the trailer and the pickup (separately) a short distance in case of mechanical issues with the pickup.

*Full trailers have front steerable axles with a tow bar, unlike semi-trailers with only a set of rear axles.  Keeps the weight off of the suspension of the tow vehicle.   Think of the second trailer in a set of doubles you may have seen on the interstate.

Got it.  If it were me I'd probably be looking for a domestic crew cab pick up with a towing package.  They can usually fill in pretty well for a sport-ute and have additional flexibility when carry anything large and bulky.  If that won't work for you I'd probably look at the full sized sport-utes.

In your price range the pick-up trucks are going to be more numerous in terms of selection and will usually have a bit more towing capacity as well.   For some reason its hard to find a sport-ute with a useful axle ratio as a tow vehicle until you get to the bigger stuff.  Probably has to do with the C.A.F.E. standards and the general popularity of the vehicles among urban and suburban customers.

Among the candidates for usable sport-utes I would list the Chevy/GMC Tahoe/Suburban platform as the most capable.   The Jeep Grand Cherokee is nearly so but a bit smaller in overall size and capability.  The Ford Expedition is nearly the size of the Chevy/GMC cars but a little weaker in the engine bay and thus less capable.  The Ford Explorer has been trending to a more car-like platform for years but the older ones were probably marginally capable for your purpose.  The Dodge/RAM Durango is also about on par with the rest of the domestics. The Toyota Land Cruiser is probably the only import I would take a chance on in this application - maybe the Nissan Armada but I don't have much experience with them.  The Nissan X-Terra has been discontinued but it was also a pretty capable platform - particularly in the 4wd specialty models.   The fact that they have been discontinued may make them a little more affordable but their 4wd-off-road chops also may tend to make them a little more "used" than some of the others.

Frankly, none of these vehicles have fared very well in terms of reported reliability and scoring by the national publications that specialize in that kind of thing.  As for my own experience, I have run Fords, Chevy/GMC's and Toyotas over the years and have found them all to be fairly reliable as long as the maintenance is kept up.  All of them have their quirks which you have to get used to and in your price range I'd be looking for a vehicle with a complete service history and probably would pay extra to get it.   My family ( Dad, brother and me )has run Chevy Suburbans and K 5 Blazers since the late 1970's and had good luck with them.  Others folks wouldn't buy one on a bet.  They are not cheap to maintain - or to run - so just plan on that up front.  Properly maintained they are pretty capable vehicles.

For pick up trucks I like Fords but the Expedition has never impressed me much.  The Toyota Landcruiser is legendary - but as an off-roader and not as a tow vehicle.  Mine was an FJ40 and lasted for years here in Arizona.  The later models went all "Land Rover" and got expensive but they were still a pretty good truck.  No experience with the Dodge Durango but a neighbor had one for years and beat the crap out of it and couldn't get it to quit on him.  Jeeps are quirky but the Grand Cherokee-Commander line has been pretty decent over the years just not terribly reliable in factory trim.  Again, no personal experience - just talking with owners around home and out in the boonies.  The Nissan X-Terra is a good truck and has the bonus of being found in a surprising number of two wheel drive versions which simplifies the towability and improves fuel economy if you don't need the 4wd.  One neighbor has owned three.  One he wore out.  The second one he bought for his wife and the third one he bought when he heard they were being discontinued and it's his daily driver and hunting truck so I guess you could call him a fan.

Given what you want it for and what you want to spend I would think you might be well served to consider buying it from and individual.  You might pay a little more than at a dealer but you're more likely to score a vehicle with a complete maintenance history and fairly moderate use.

A lot of older folks buy the tow vehicle and the travel trailer at the same time and when the notion of trouping around the country leaves them the toys get used less and less.  I have seen them offered as a pair in many classified ads in the local paper and some of the travel trailer magazines and site.  Sometimes RV dealers take the whole package in trade but that is less common in my experience.

Bottom line is, you never know where you'll find the vehicle you finally end up with.  Knowledge is power and flexibility is a bargaining tool.

    Hope this helps.   :cool

    No advice on trucks.

The past two weekends bookended a trip up to Sedona, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend and Monument Valley.  Got in less hiking than we wanted, saw some spectacular storms up close and spectacular scenery.  I lost track of how many miles we drove.  It was a good road trip.
