What are you doing....
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:03:49 pm »
Well, the election is over and all the armchair politicians have had their say.   But, here's what I want to know.  What are you doing specifically to be involved in the governance of your bailiwick.  We all complain and offer opinions criticizing the politicians.  But our founders set up a participatory constitutional republic.  Informed participation is necessary.  What are you doing?

I'll go first:
in the mid 90's I was elected to the office of township trustee, one of five elected positions that governs the township.  Served 4 years and then stepped aside.  During that time I was on the Planning Commission for the township.  We implemented a zoning ordinance which was set in motio9n by a Master Plan that was developed by involving all the residents in the township.  The purpose was to try and maintain the ambiance of our township while understanding we would be pressured by growth.  Our township is blessed with a major cold water river, many streams and creeks, several large and small lakes, swamps, prairie land, hardwood and piney woods. The bottom of a national forest rests in our township.   We have much wildlife (game and otherwise) as well as some of the best trout fishing east of the Snake River.  Currently I serve as the Vice Chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals and have for 8 years.  I also serve on several other boards:

In the township, I'm First Deputy on our Fire Command Board.

I hold two position in the county:  Vice chair of the County Board of Public Works and trustee of a utility Authority (waste water) that serves a township and a small town.

I also chair our Lake Improvement Board which is set up by state statute to assess the residents of the lake's watershed to protect and improve the bottom land and waters of the lake in order to preserve property values, encourage safety, improve sporting activities such as fishing and boating and generally watch over the resource.

We see how many poor representatives we get in our government at many levels.  It will never get better until good men and women of honor get involved.  I got involved late in my life, so to aspire to higher office is out of my reach.  But some of you are young.  You need to pick up the gauntlet if our country is to survive.  You start out local and move up.  I hope some of you do.

my life right now is such that I cannot run for or hold an office, but I do communicate frequently with my reps, letting them know my views.

Right now I'm a full time student finishing my degree in Political Science.

Last summer I interned for Congressman Jeff Flake, this summer I'm hoping to start with the Phoenix PD.  Seeing as I made a few friends who either are in or will be running for office, I'm sure I'll end up doing something once I get back.

I'm getting ready to run for a public office.  If I can't get them to listen, I'll take their job and do it myself.

George just thinks 'If SuperDell can run, so can I'.  ;D

Due to my circumstances, I can't run for any office for a couple of years. I fully plan to.
I looked at the 2007 city budget and didn't realize how much some of these people are getting paid. Not like Wayne LaPierre, but I don't want to be paying them them that much for what they do - or don't. The county clerk in particular bothers me - she has run unopposed the last two elections, and is doing a terrible job at it. Not that I particularly want to be a clerk, but for that kind of money I might take the office and not make people pay 10x the amount they owe for vehicle registration, make sure all the votes get counted, generally be a decent guy.
If I saw a guy with a 60cu/ft safe filled to the brim with nothing but Jennings, Lorcins and Hi-Points, I'd look at the guy and say "Right on brother".

I currently don't have a bailiwick to involve myself in the governance of. I likely won't for a number of years. As a nomad vagrant active duty member of the military, I'll be moving around a lot for the next 6-20 years. I don't think members of the military can hold public office, if it was even practical. The likelihood of getting elected and being able to serve for a full term is small considering TDY trips, deployments, and PCS's. When one of these days I settle down somewhere, I'll definitely consider it depending on the locale.

I posted some other stuff in this thread, along the same lines.

I am going to be making waves at our local GOP party headquarters to get back to the basics.  I recently signed up to be an NRA recruiter.  I will be organizing a Friends of the NRA banquet in my area.  I run a Christian Discussion Forum to help motivate that group.  I'm writing my congressmen, and if they don't listen to me know, they will listen to me  come election season.  8)

I'm impressed by how much some of you are involved in, and I really don't know how to thank you for doing so, but consider this an effort to say "Thanks"   :)

After getting both kids out of the house and in college, I now find myself taking care of my parents full-time when I'm not working (my father has advanced Alzheimer's and my mother has had two knee replacements, both are in their 80s) .  It may be years (if ever) before I'm free to be much help.

I cannot thank enough those of you that have taken their personal time to keep tabs, and stop the many attacks on a way of life that would disappear were it not for your efforts.
