Heh - that depends on which part of history you're talking about...

Recent history.  Go back more than about 40 to 45 years and the very definitions of "Republican" and "Democrat" completely change.

As much as I'd like to see an end to "Republican" and "Democrat", so we can all be "American", I realize it's not going to happen.  I will, however, refuse to wear either political label.  I am an American and I WILL vote for what I think is best for America, not me.

I have to agree 100% with what George said.  Now is not the time to 3rd party the fedzilla.  Start at home, work your way up.  The founding fathers just didn't say, "Hey, I want this land.  Let's start a country."  They wanted something for "posterity" and that is what WE have to do.  Work for the future.

It's a long walk from the farms, mills, etc. to the White House, but if you don't vote you're not even taking a step.  This applies locally, as well.  A +1 to Thernlund.  Show up or don't, your action or inaction will have an effect.  Apathy rarely rewards you well.

Larry says Romney gets a C+ and I won't argue that.  Reasonably successful as a governor and Olympic (not small, inner-city community) organizer.  Even with 4 years as Prez. for Obama, Romney has more experience for the job.  Ryan as a VP is far from a bad thing.  Heck, Obama should have ... oh, wait... nevermind.  The Big O can keep Joe.

Get out and vote.  IN. EVERY. SINGLE. ELECTION. YOU. CAN.  The difference you make by not doing so will be felt all the way from your street to Pennsylvania Avenue.  Maybe not today, or next year, or this decade.  To misquote, "All it takes for evil to win is for good men and women to sit apathetically by and let it."
Missouri"You can only fight the way you practice"  - Miyamoto Musashi

Diapers and politicians should be changed often. For the very same reasons.

So some folks are not aware that we can lose the country. Without a shooting war. DNC=dictators in waiting.
They are ignoring the COTUS and if congress will not play they will let the alphabet agencys do their biding or write a law on the POTUS letterhead and call it Executive Order.
Primary season is over for most of us. Dead over for the POTUS nomination. Get over it and help us sever BO.

But you shouldn't have to take a rape shower afterwards either.

There is that but it is still a cheap way to pretend you are "doing something".  Nevertheless, voting in not intended to make the voter feel good.  It is to make victor feel safe.  The more people who vote, the more who accept the system as it is and the greater the certainty that the political business can continue as usual.

Heck, all he has to do is keep harping on this note, "Current deficit continues to skyrocket, unemployment rate still X%. Four more years? Are you serious??? Mr. President, I thought you knew all about sustainability. America cannot sustain another four years of YOU!"

I loved the Bane comment also.

I always try to find a silver lining. Maybe if Obama gets back in it will be the catalyst we need to press the re-set button, maybe things wouldn't change for the better without him fluffing things up all the more until there's no option but snap back

I vote with my Second Amendment. As long as politicians keep their hands and laws away from my firearms and accessories, I don't wholly care what else they do.

My fear is a 2nd run of Obama will see gun laws the likes of which haven't been seen since 1986 and the Clinton era AWB.

You better care.  Politicians, given enough time and a long leash, could quite easily take your guns while simultaneously leaving the 2A completely intact.

Being a single-issue voter is going to do you more harm than good.

If it makes you feel any better, 2nd terms as a general rule tend to be more moderate than the 1st.  In your examples, for example, one was Reagan taking a more moderate position during his second term, the former was during Clinton's first (even Columbine, in his 2nd, didn't result in him leaving his later moderate position).

There tends to be a much greater effort to work with the other party as the now lame duck president needs broader political support, and is looking to build their legacy with something that is more likely to withstand a change in administration.

Have you been paying any attention at all to what the fluff is going on THIS PLANET?!?

You MIGHT have a point except in THIS reality our glorious leader has been on camera promising the freaking Russians that he would do all sorts of good stuff in his next term because he "wouldn't have to worry about elections".

With that crap all bets are off.

Has anyone else noticed that the left leaning media (CNN, NBC, MSNBC, Huffpo, et al) can't decide if Ryan is a big spending RINO or if he is so fiscaly conservative that he will starve the elderly and sell our children's organs to cut the budget. The same hosts and authors even seem to alternate between the two.

Not having to worry about reelection swings both ways.  It also means that you don't have to pander to the radical base, and can pursue more moderate policy goals that are more likely to be adopted and maintained since you don't need to worry about maintaining an effective reelection foundation amongst your ideological core.  So, yeah, I might have a point, but only if you figure in the last sixty years of history.

I'm curious how these laws are supposed to get passed by a lame duck President, an opposition Congress, and a Supreme Court that opposes them as often as it supports.  Administratively some changes could be made, which could then immediately be undone with a new administration, but again, that's not what tends to happen.

Might he swing left in a second term?  Sure, he might.  But, that's not what usually happens.

He has proven that he is willing to get things done other ways, and even if you discount that he will absolutely bork us domestically, because hes a freaking Alinskyite Communist, his foreign policy hovers between retarded and traitorous NOW much less if he doesn't give a crap about re-election.

And why in the 9 levels of hell would he tell a Russian leader "not to worry if he gets re-elected" because he will move to a more pro-west stance?

IMHO Obama is a commited ideological leftist and will rule as "left" as he can get by with.  A second term will only uninhibit him where it might inhibit another.
He stuffed Obamacare down our throats and that is very unpopular.  It didn't bother him so far as getting reelected.  And he's too much of a narcissist to worry about what happens to democrats adter he leaves in 2016, if he gets a second term.  Normally it is THAT which would temper a president's second term; he wouldn't want his party and/or successor to suffer.

    Alinskyite Communist,

Saul Alinsky was NOT a Communist!  He was an important figure in the NON-SOCIALIST left, and publically condemned Communism as one of the great causes of death and suffering in this quote:

    Quote from: Saul Alinsky
Not at any time. I've never joined any organization—not even the ones I've organized myself. I prize my own independence too much. And philosophically, I could never accept any rigid dogma or ideology, whether it's Christianity or Marxism. One of the most important things in life is what Judge Learned Hand described as 'that ever-gnawing inner doubt as to whether you're right.' If you don't have that, if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide.

    Happy?

Ryan vs Biden should come off as sandblasting a saltine, but never put it past the media to ask such inane questions that Ryan doesn't manage to hit any sort of stride. Biden can cope very ably with inanity, being inane himself.

He's very avuncular, and everyone can relate to him. We all have that loveable, idiot uncle that just likes to say the darndest things, that you would never trust with a gun and you're a bit worried about the DMV trusting with a motor vehicle, and Joe is able to tap into that vibe easily. It's how he transforms that feeling of pleasant, affable ineptitude into "hey, you can totally trust me being one heartbeat away from the missile codes" that is truly impressive, a Jedi Mind Trick on an epic scale.

Saul Alinsky was NOT a Communist!  He was an important figure in the NON-SOCIALIST left, and publically condemned Communism as one of the great causes of death and suffering in this quote:

Deathrider, you've been listening to so much pundit bullcrap that you don't even know who the people you're using as an insult ARE!  Go read a damned book, and then you can say something without coming off as a complete blithering idiot.

Alinsky was not a communist but his tactics often ...."stunk!!":

    Quote from: Wikipedia
After organizing FIGHT (an acronym for Freedom, Independence [subsequently Integration], God, Honor, Today) in Rochester, New York,[9] Alinsky once threatened to stage a "fart in" to disrupt the sensibilities of the city's establishment at a Rochester Philharmonic concert. FIGHT members were to consume large quantities of baked beans after which, according to author Nicholas von Hoffman, "FIGHT's increasingly gaseous music-loving members would hie themselves to the concert hall where they would sit expelling gaseous vapors with such noisy velocity as to compete with the woodwinds."[10] Satisfied with the reaction to his threat, Alinsky would later threaten a "piss in" at Chicago O'Hare Airport. Alinsky planned to arrange for large numbers of well dressed African Americans to occupy the urinals and toilets at O'Hare for as long as it took to bring the city to the bargaining table.

He was quote the social "irritant" and I think I can find other reasons to dislike him aside from spurious charges of "communism."  :vomit :panic :shocked :shocked :-[
