This is sooooo nauseating.
« on: November 14, 2008, 01:02:45 am »
I thought this was a joke, but it isn't. Look at section 108.....

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:H.R.808:
You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again. -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. - Ayn Rand

"I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." -Robert Heinlein.

One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws, but conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. –– Martin Luther King, Jr.

    I don't understand why some people just can't get it.

    That's all good and well.. as long as every citizen (and illegal) agrees to play nice.

    Quote
    (4) promote the development of human potential;

    I see nothing in there that promotes the development of human potential. Only bondage to others - other governments when ours is disarmed, and to our government when we are.

    As a principle, I disagree with most expansion of government. Having said that, I disagree with funding for any "Miss America Speech" dreams. This sounds like a ploy to give more of Obama's friends government jobs. I don't see anything regarding disarmament of civilians, or really anything regarding non-nuclear disarmament.
    Its more crap the gov shouldn't be spending money on, but there's so much of that nonsense already, I don't devote much political aggression to it. It doesn't look like a Constitutional issue to me. Just a waste of time an money.

    Maybe if we just say the word "peace" enough times, it'll just happen.   :banghead

    The bill, like thousands of others, died in committee.  It never had a chance of reaching a vote, much less winning one.

    This particular one died on 5/18/2007, so it's nothing to be concerned with.

    It's a really handy website once you learn your way around it.  From the link, click on "Bill Summery and Status File".  This brings you to the main page for this bill, where you can check virtually everything (official) about it. Note that the last major action taken was it's referral to subcommittee a year and a half ago, where it was left to die.  This process is the standard why of getting rid of a bill in a manner that is courteous towards the submitter and cosponsors.

    Feud, if you are familiar with it could you see what is really out there on the horizon for an AW ban and get us some links we can share.

    Ooh Peace!  Everybody wants peace, don't they?

    Peace as an "organizing principle" is nonsense, it is like saying;

    "hold serenity as an organizing principle, coordinating service to every level of American society."

    What?

    Now we all hold hands and sing "Kum Bah Ya" as they take our guns and melt them into a statue devoted to peace.

    Feud, if you are familiar with it could you see what is really out there on the horizon for an AW ban and get us some links we can share.

    From what I've seen it's actually pretty quiet right now.  Most of the bills have been sent to die quite a while ago, and it doesn't look like anything new has recently been proposed.  The only one worth noting is H.R. 6257, which reauthorizes and expands the assault weapons ban.  Choice bits include:

    Quote
          (v)(1) It shall be unlawful for a person to manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon.

          `(2) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to the possession or transfer of any semiautomatic assault weapon otherwise lawfully possessed under Federal law on the date of the enactment of this subsection.

          `(3) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to--

                `(A) any of the firearms, or replicas or duplicates of the firearms, specified in appendix A to this section, as such firearms were manufactured on October 1, 1993;

                `(B) any firearm that--

                      `(i) is manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action;

                      `(ii) has been rendered permanently inoperable; or

                      `(iii) is an antique firearm;

                `(C) any semiautomatic rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine that holds more than 5 rounds of ammunition; or

                `(D) any semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than 5 rounds of ammunition in a fixed or detachable magazine.

    There are some details later that explicitly prohibit a few things (AR's, magazines that attach outside the grip, etc).  It also bans nationwide high capacity magazines, which are defined as:

    Quote
       (A) means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device manufactured after the date of enactment of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition; but

                `(B) does not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.'.

    Fortunately this bill has been sitting in committee since July with no major sponsors, so it isn't terribly likely to go anywhere at this point.

    The way I read that bill (and I am by no means a lawyer), it is fairly tame.
    Quote
    `(2) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to the possession or transfer of any semiautomatic assault weapon otherwise lawfully possessed under Federal law on the date of the enactment of this subsection.
    I understand that to mean any weapon legal now will be legal then, just no new production?

    It does say any duplicate or copy of the Colt AR-15, which is pretty much any AR-15 is define as a semi-auto AW. But it gives you the ability to have two AW features instead of the one of some of the bills.

    And it has a sunset. And it isn't going anywhere right now.  ;D
    So yeah, it would be bad, but not as bad as the 1994 ban.

    Yeah, at this point it isn't likely to go anywhere.  It's been in committee a while and doesn't have a lot of support, so I wouldn't worry about it.

    Maybe...but whats up with Peace Day. It's like the '60's exploaded on the capitol building. Oh, and the peace education through all levels of our education system.
