I'm not much on sympathy, so that's not what this is about.

Echoing another recent thread, this place feels like family to me, and that's why I feel OK in asking this. My wife, Linda, is in the hospital right now and having a very tough time. Official diagnosis is acute renal failure. So far the docs can't say why or what exactly is going on. At the onset, which was relatively sudden, it was liver, kidneys and gall bladder not working right or at all. The other stuff has mostly cleared up, but kidney function has not come back. She's on dialysis as of this week and is visibly stronger and more with it, but the docs just don't know why her kidneys shut down. They do say the kidney tissue (biopsy) looks OK, and kidney function will probably return at some point, but there's no way to predict how long that may take. Right now she's better, but still very sick.

Quick update before I head back over to the hospital. Over the last two days Linda has improved dramatically. She's stronger, color is normal, and obviously more with-it. Enough so that we're going to have to work at keeping her in the hospital until she's strong enough to come home.

Kidneys are not working yet. All we can do at this point is wait, hope, and pray.

Your prayers and support are appreciated more than I can put into words, and I believe that has as much to do with her improvement as anything else. She was at the point of just wanting to give up, so tired of being so sick she just didn't care, and the fading away of that state of mind has been a huge milestone. Y'all's support has been a tremendous boost to me, too, as I've been pretty worn out by all this. This place really is family.

Here's hoping and praying for answers and remedies.

I'm somewhat familiar with kidney issues. My brother-from-another-mother's family is riddled with PKD. Cysts on the kidneys that are eventually, to the kidney at least, fatal.

Scary times. Hope there's a good ending.

Tell her to hang in there. And, she owes us a few words of introduction when she's well enough to come home and resume normal activities.

Yesterday Linda seems to have made an about-face. Docs say her blood work looks MUCH better, and are now confident she's on the way to returning kidney function. They're still mystified as to what exactly happened, but we'll take any improvement and worry about the rest later.

Last night she was visibly changed, and dramatically so -- more alert and positive than I've seen her in the last 2-1/2 weeks. My feeling is she's passed some kind of internal crisis point and is coming back. (She's telling me what to do again -- she's back.) She had been on dialysis daily, but they skipped it yesterday, and will see how she does through the weekend without. If she's still OK Monday I think she'll be back home soon.

Once more, I can't tell y'all how much your support has meant. I was at a pretty low ebb there for a while; it's a frustratingly helpless feeling, having someone so close in that kind of shape and having nothing to do but pray and wait. Knowing I wasn't waiting alone really helped.

Glad to hear she's on the mend. The only thing more frustrating than the helpless feeling you get standing around trying to find some way to be useful is watching the doctors scratch their heads while trying to do the same.
