Wife got a contract in northern Texas.
She'll be leaving next Wednesday.
Anyone know about Witchita Falls?

I actually went to Sheppard AFB for my tech training.  Just outside of Wichita Falls.  It lies midway between Dallas and Oklahoma City.  Relatively large town so it has all of your big box stores but still "feels" small. What specifically did you want to know about it?

Pretty much the ugliest part of the state.  Please don't judge us based on your experience there.

Crime rate?  Not going to lie to you, its surprisingly high for a town its size but it is dropping.  In particular I was told to avoid Scott St. at night.  The flip side to that is that its a CCW friendly town.  The mall and a few bars are the only times I recalled seeing a "no concealed weapons" sign.

    http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/texas/wichita-falls.html#.UK6s4Xy9KSM

This website is actually pretty informative for basic information like that.  Unfortunately I only stayed on base and its a little removed from the rest of town so I can't help you with the rest, my apologies.  Any realtor in the area worth their salt should be able to point you in the right direction.

Heres where I can help you.  Its home to two bases (Sheppard AFB and Ft Sill, OK) and a medium sized college, so the availability for night life is pretty good for a town its size.  Its near Lake Texoma and there's a few outdoor activities available nearby.  The locals are, well its TX, so laid back and very polite.  Weather is hot and muggy all summer long with the occasional tornado.  Winter brings freakishly cold wind with the occasional ice storm.  Bottom line though, it's easy to hate that town but many of the instructors I know stationed there really liked it.

Like BBQ?  Check out the Branding Iron, it's awesome  :thumbup1. Like Mexican food?  Go to San Antonio... Hope this helps.

    Now for the important stuff.

Double Tap Ranch is about 10 miles west of town. It's a private club focused mostly on competitive shooting. They've got 10 or 12 bays, about 30x20yd each, and a few rifle berms out to 350ish. I'm not a member but I shot a lot of matches there when I lived in Abilene. Robert Porter, the owner, is a really good guy, obsessed with safety on his property and an excellent stage designer. He makes his matches really fun, and they draw in shooters from over a hundred miles away (I lived 130 from there). Mostly pistol competitions, but last I checked he was doing 5th Saturday 3-gun matches. He also hosts Double Tap Championships every spring/summer.

Other than that, there are a bunch of clubs within driving range. To the south there is Ridge Runner Gun Club in Breckenridge, TX; Addiction Shooters in Stamford, TX, and a few more in Dallas and southern Oklahoma. Lots of shooting to be done in that area.

Good, cause she has sent her stuff in to Utah for the permit CCW and I want to get her into defensive pistol (Revolver) classes ASAP. Thanx for the info and I'm glad there is a nearby pistol/rifle/training range there.

(Note: She has her Indiana Permit CCW so iot's good through to Texas except that iddybitty part through Illinois.)

The more challenging part of driving isn't which states accept your CPL...it's sorting through the myriad of laws on how you're allowed to carrying your pistol in the car.  Driving from NC to TX (via SC, GA, AL, MO, and LA) I eventually gave up.

If you have your cpl it really shouldn't matter how you carry it in the car as long as it is out of sight.
It is when you are in a state that doesn't honor it that you have to do some studying.

That's one reason I tried to only travel through states that took my cpl.

When did this place open up?  That was my biggest gripe about Wichita Falls, no place to shoot while I was there.  Small town in he middle of North Texas, you'd think there'd be one.

No idea when it opened. I just started competing a few years ago, and it's always been there as far as I was concerned. But like I said, it is a private club, and it's not easy to find. I've driven past the gate knowing what to look for (big "DTR" on the gate) and missed it a few times. I don't know how much Porter advertises around town, but if you're into competitive shooting in West Texas or Southern Oklahoma, you've probably heard of it.

Aside from a couple TDYs, I haven't been out there for any significant time since 07 so it could be newer.  Aside from the good ol boy types in my tech school class, we had a Russian immigrant that wanted to learn how to shoot so it wasn't a lack of trying our part.  Closest we found was in Dallas and therefore too far for us to drive without permission.  Of course when we asked the flight chief, we were shot down.   :(

Oldest reference to it I can find is 2005, and that was an announcement for the Double Tap Championships, so I'm sure it was around for at least a few years before that.

    I will miss her greatly.

But at least I can concentrate of my book writing from now til the cows come home.
Maybe even get it done in time for release in early January.
     ;)

    Pray, please. Just pray.
And IF we win the big powerball tonight (Wife's idea to play) we will be hosting a massive get together down in Texas. Maybe buy out the Double Tap Ranch for the week and fly everyone in.
