I'll start off with this one because it resonates with me.

I love quotes and will probably contribute a few more here later. For now, here are two of my favourite quotes/rules to live by.

I first heard it, minus the brilliant part, from a crusty old Green Beret master sergeant.

Just what does "woke" and "wokeness" even mean?  In the current context?

I mean, "I woke up this morning, and my wokeness level is dependent on the amount of coffee this morning." is the only way those words work for me (recognizing that "wokeness" isn't really a word).

It is the liberal left version of "aware". Anyone who is woke is aware of the "evils" of America such as our patriarchal system, how the rich are bad, internalised misogyny, cultural racism, and rape culture.

The right leaning versions of this political awareness are called "red pilled" (which sadly the right has taken from the Manosphere and FTSU culture) and then "Based" which I have seen used by both vanilla right wingers and even more extreme storm front types.

MTK20 -
Thanks for trying to help.  Really.

But, still,  what do these new "words" mean?

Okay, the words "based", "woke", and "red pilled" all mean someone who feels "politically enlightened". Yes, it is about as hubristic as that sounds. While the words all mean the same thing, you can use which one is being used as a heuristic to understand what side of the political spectrum the user comes from.

If they use the word:

Woke- then they are typically in the SJW, left leaning, feminist camp.

Red pilled- they are typically right wing or just a denizen of the manopshere.

Based- used also by right wingers but I have seen this used by the storm front types that would be considered "alt-right" or proponents of an ethno-state.

What is a manosphere? It is the area of sexual/gender politics that is solely for the purpose of men's issues, health, and rights. There are three groups that encompass this area which are Men's rights activist (MRA's), Men going their own way (MGTOW), and then the red headed step children of the bunch pick up artists (PUA's. Not sure how chasing skirts got political, but they are lumped in there too).

FTSU- is an acronym meaning "fluff their s___ up". This is a fun story coming from the manosphere. Feminists were pretty keen on saying that "a man has no political say when it comes to women's rights. Our body, our choice. If you are a man, then STFU (shut the fluff up)." So, with turnabout being fair play, the MRA's poked fun at them by using FTSU as a mantra. Because poking fun at feminists is always fun  :cool . One would think this meme would die off with time as just a blip in history. Not so, it seems, as s___ posting IRL can have some staying power. Don't believe me? If you watch the red pill documentary from just a couple of years ago, you can catch a sneak peak of some of the main speakers at the international convention of men's issues (ICMI) wearing clothing that says 'FTSU' on it. In summary it is a stupid joke about a stupid feminist slogan used to deride and take the piss out of the opposition. There are many instances like this in other areas of politics.

If you have any further questions I will try in earnest to answer them  :cool .

I still think that most of that crap stuff is as Playwright Bill put it:  Much Ado About Nothing.

Mind you, I'm not making light of abuse, or rape, or sexual predators.  Those all need to be dealt with seriously, and on a case by case basis.  But to lump everyone who was born with the same anatomical plumbing as someone who was/is an abuser is ludicrous.

I forget who turned in around on some feminist by asking if he should treat her like a cheap prostitute when she was bashing he and all males.  She was appalled (and she was a very PROPER lady, she'd have you know).  To which he is purported to have replied (paraphrasing here), "Well, you've got all the right equipment."

You do realise we are talking about politics, right? Of course it is ridiculous and "much ado about nothing". It is also all encompassing and the discussions are never ending. It's a masochist's game. It is much in the same vein as the man who smashed his hand repetitively with a hammer. His friend asked "why are you doing that?", to which he replied "because my hand feels so good between the hits."

From Mark Twain:

If we would learn what the human race really is at bottom, we need only observe it in election times.
- Mark Twain's Autobiography

The laws of Nature take precedence of all human laws. The purpose of all human laws is one -- to defeat the laws of Nature. This is the case among all the nations, both civilized and savage. It is a grotesquerie, but when the human race is not grotesque it is because it is asleep and losing its opportunity.

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

I meant to imply that soon we will not be able to afford the lofty  morality and ethics which "we" as a society currently espouse. Then comes the "crash" and the brutality which will almost inevitably follow.
The price has not been lowered,  it has simply been deferred to later generations,  who will wind up paying in full plus interest.

That one's a gem.  IMHO, at present Thomas Sowell IS one of the smartest guys in the room.

No argument from me on that score.

I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.

God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.

Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without the thought of quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus.

Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts To Explain The Entire U. S. Government | 1991 | P. J. O'Rourke

Yes I did just post the same quote in two different threads.  I highly recommend this book.  It is entertaining, and informative.

True.  Government stinks.  All government.  Ours stinks a little less than some.  Sometimes.  Or it could just be that I'm up wind.   :cool

Understand that P.J. O'Rourke is an author and political satirist.  Kind of a conservative - ish libertarian sort of fellow.  As a creature who makes his living inside Washington's Beltway he takes a very jaundiced view of government in general and our federal government in particular.  He savages all forms of government everywhere ( another quote of his: " You can't get Chinese carry out food in China and cigars are rationed in Cuba.  That tells you all you need to know about communism." ) and while his main target is governments he makes a pretty fair observer of the human condition.  Personally, I consider him the late 20th century's successor to Mark Twain.

I believe his observation from the quote in question is designed to illustrate the point that has been made before:  Government, at its best is barely tolerable and at its worst completely intolerable.  As in if a product were as bad for us as government is, the government would ban the sale of it.

To get a little better feel for his style pull up the WikiQuote site which has quotations from all his published books.

Another of his quotes on communism, commenting on the general dirtiness and dinginess of East Berlin, "Perhaps the greatest indictment of communism is that it could do this to a nation of Germans."

Ok.  I'll grant you that but the Irish have perfected the art and using a glass of your favorite beverage gives you a prop that can be used to affect a dramatic pause or just appear thoughtful as you sip before replying.  Ask me how I know .   .   .    :whistle

I started reading O'Rourke when I was in High School, so could not legally imbibe.  The complaining may have stuck, ask my wife, but the taste for Irish whisky came from reading Jack Higgins.  I think he was still employed at Rolling Stone, when my History/Government teacher recommended him to me.

Parliament of Whores came out my senior year of high school, amusingly enough while I was taking the required Civics/US Government class.  I don't remember how I came by the book, though.

I decided to take some advice on here and poke around some quotes by P.J. O'rourke.

When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.

The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to.

For a bit more contemporary take on current affairs and perhaps a touch more bite in the satire you may want to check out the commentary articles and books by Kurt Schlichter.   His style of writing reads like a screenplay or the text of an impassioned speech and he reminds me a lot of Dr. Paul Elam - only with a somewhat wider focus setting.  Definitely some quote worthy content in there.

"There seems to have been an actual decline in rational thinking. The United States had become a place where entertainers and professional athletes were mistaken for people of importance. They were idolized and treated as leaders; their opinions were sought on everything and they took themselves just as seriously-after all, if an athlete is paid a million or more a year, he knows he is important ... so his opinions of foreign affairs and domestic policies must be important, too, even though he proves himself to be ignorant and subliterate every time he opens his mouth."  R.A.H.
