« on: January 12, 2009, 12:39:44 am »
Not to be out done by BART police, New Orleans Police Officers shot a man 14 times, 12 times in the back.   :vomit Found the story from Xavier: http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-year-blood-in-new-orleans.html

14 hits from 48 rounds fired.  So very sad on so many levels.
Train hard, fight easy.

I have so much I want to say but I can't.  Suffice it to say there are 3 cities I was happy to see in my rear view mirror.  New Orleans was one of them.  I feel for the innocents who lost everything during Katrina but I felt then and still do that the flooding wasn't nearly extensive enough.  That city should be given back to the swamp, we would all be better off for it.

Far too many holes in the "information" to come to a conclusion.

In my opinion, if you come into town to celebrate New Year's, why not participate in a city sponsored fireworks display OR BE IN YOUR HOUSE?!

You are durned sure that at least 85% of the people on the street have been drinking, or are drunk. Not, to me, a good time to be out, much less out with a gun.

As I said, missing far too much information to make a decision.

I agree with Xavier that the plainclothes guys could (should) have called in a marked vehicle to make contact. That decision cost this guy his life. I was in New Orleans, in the French Quarter on New Year's Eve, and let me tell you, there were police EVERYWHERE. If the plainclothes guys had just called, I'm sure that within a minute they would have had backup, no problem.
Now they're just trying to cover up a big misjudgement. BOO

    From Xaviers blog:

"Police officers engaging unknown citizens with guns drawn must positively identify themselves as officers of the law to prevent unjust killings. Shouting "Stop! Police!" while advancing towards the armed citizen is not enough. Any street thug can shout that. Flashing lights on the dashboard of a beat up and dusty maroon Ford Taurus are not enough. A gold badge swinging on a chain underneath a battered parka is not enough."

I'm sorry but what else is there? If these things are not enough what is? I can buy uniforms online, I can get decals made and "mark" a vehicle, anything that can "positively identify" a person as an officer can be forged with relative ease, when do we realize enough is enough?

I am afraid that we as a society have come to a point that we feel anytime something goes anyway other than the perfect outcome we feel we need to "fix it" so it doesn't happen again. When are we going to realize that we have things pretty good-make that really good. But unfortunately bad things happen, even to good people. And as much as we would like it we are never going to obtain a utopian society. Its not going to happen.

IMerrell: I think he is getting at the official-ness of it.

Anyone can buy a junkyard Taurus or Crown Victoria, put a set of lights on the dash (thereby avoiding any attention until they want it), and pull someone over. It would lessen confusion if an officer who is going to advance with his gun drawn on a suspect has a current police vehicle, with exterior light bars, grille lights, etc.

We had a discussion about uniforms in the thread about a man being arrested for wearing a shirt with the word "Police" on it. If all the officers wore a standard department uniform, complete with the badge, shoes, belt, etc., it wouldn't be so easy to mistake them. In other words, wearing coat over it all so you can't be identified isn't going to help the situation.
If I saw a guy with a 60cu/ft safe filled to the brim with nothing but Jennings, Lorcins and Hi-Points, I'd look at the guy and say "Right on brother".

Never cared too much for NO.  My brother, may he rest in peace, was down there visiting some friends and went out to get some smokes.  He heard a car slam on its brakes, heard someone yell "Halt" , put up his hands and got shot through the wrist.  Cop told him later it was a good thing it was getting dark as he was aiming for his head.  My brother's crime?  He looked like someone the cops were looking for.
