Police shoot man in back
« on: January 07, 2009, 12:51:41 am »
Just saw a video where a BART officer shot a handcuffed individual, who was lying face down, in the back.  He died at hospital.  Some said officer was reaching for his taser, grabbed wrong weapon.  Question: why would he have to tase a subdue individual anyway?  I'm not anti-leo (I work as a security officer, a rent-a-cop) but honestly what was he thinking?

The reason I like a DA first shot, and SA subsequent shots.  Because, if I were ever stupid enough to confuse a Taser for a Glock, I'd have that trigger weight warning me stuff was wrong.

Oh wait... that excuse is dumber than the View's current events discussion!

I thought Glocks were SAO. Something about the striker being "cocked." Can't de-cock it unless you dry-fire it.

There are a few conflicting reports. CNN says that one witness video shows the young man gesturing with his hands as if to ask not to be tazed.

This will be an interesting story to follow. That officer will probably be kissing his career and freedom goodbye. Most tazers are carried on the weak side so you have to reach across to draw them, and there is no need to draw anyway with a compliant suspect. Even if he "zoned out" and grabbed the wrong weapon, he shouldn't have had his finger on the trigger.

What a tragic way to start the new year, especially for Grant's four year old daughter.

A Glock is a sort of hybrid single action.  It's partially cocked when chambered.  The act of pulling the trigger cocks it the rest of the way and fires.

But... for all practical purposes, the internal workings not withstanding, it is pretty much SAO with a long pull.

True about "de-cocking".  Must be dry-fired.

They are SAO.  Thus, if you go with a standard 5.5 lb trigger or a 3.5 pounder, it's probably no different from the Taser trigger switch.  I was 7 pounds minimum on a serious pistol trigger, or an SA pistol with a thumb safety that's got to come off before it goes pop.

I like the NY-1 trigger for Glocks.

This is very unfortunate, both for the public and for the officer.

Would this be an argument against having things become second nature to you?  In this case, the officer may have been used to pulling his gun from all of his training.  I bet there was no hesitation when the officer drew his weapon and fired, programed like a machine.

This is just going to be bad for firearms, and having it involve LEO doesn't make it any less bad.

I think the fact that it invovled a cop takes some of the heat OFF firearms.  If a citizen did that it'd be cold blooded murder, cut and dried, and you'd hear all the usual anti-gun rhetoric.  But as a cop did it, I doubt you'll hear any anti utterings at all.

But overall, yup.  Bad all the way around.

So very - very sad.  For those of you not familiar with the San Francisco Bay area, BART is Bay Area Rapid Transit and they have their own sworn police force because the trains cross many cities and counties.  BART police do not have the best reputation.  That having been said, I can attest that no good can come from being outdoors most places in Oakland after dark and certainly after midnight (especially BART stations).  This is a classic example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This sounds vaguely familiar to an incident that happened in SoCal in 2002. A officer had an unruly prisoner in that back of her patrol car that was kicking the windows. Intending to draw her taser she accidentally drew her Glock and fired one round-center punched the prisoner through the heart. You can only imagine the lawsuits that followed, to include the city of Madera Ca. suing TASER international for failure to warn that the X-26 is similar to an actual handgun. I hear after 2 years of litigation that suit was just dismissed. What a mess!!!
