Police harassment....
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:32:37 pm »
I have  buddy that has gone off the deep end. He sends me a YouTube vid about a guy refusing to tell a cop if he is an American, i think its border patrol. I told him i though it was silly and he called me a sheep and that we have the right to not say anything,or give any info, to cops because they don't have any rights to ask us. He than says that the cops are just turning in to the old German brown shirts and this is Police harassment. How do you respond to someone like this?

Give him an ACLU pamphlet on what you must say, and what you need not say.

Let him try it in real life. I'm all for exercising your rights under the Constitution, but I realize I have the choice to do so, not necessarily the obligation. I can choose to say anything I want to a peace officer, answer reasonable questions, and have a pleasant interaction. Or I can go all "John Wayne," name, rank, service number, date of birth, screw you pig, I'm not saying anything and you can't make me, and likely have a less enjoyable interaction.

    It's the individual's choice.

Me: :shrug Ok what ever then go on my way. If he keeps pushing the matter tell him, be that as it may what should happen and what does actually happen are two very different things. I think we could write a novel on all the crap that goes on that isn't constitional and it keeps happening and will probably keep happening. Sorry dude the cops have more guns than you and more pull than you do. That's life. As well the cops can ask what ever they want. I don't know where he gets the they have no right to ask. As far as I know they can ask what ever they want, doesn't mean you have to answer though in many cases.

It kind of reminds me of the 9-11 was an inside job people. If you belive that fine what ever but, don't freak out and laugh at everyone who doesn't think it was an inside job. Freaking out and insulting some usually makes you look irational and does nothing to convince most people that your point of view is right.

I don't want to ask. He says he is libertarian but I think he is closer to anarchist.

If the police don't have the right to ask a question how are they supposed to investigate anything? The individual asked may decline to give an answer, but that shouldn't automatically stop a question being asked. The alternative seems to be that the police must seek warrants for absolutely everything.
Now if an officer stops the same individual every time they meet and asks the exact same question each time, that may be different.

    Most self-described libertarians are.

I'm not. I believe the government, at all levels, has a purpose. When I was still registered to vote in my native Maryland, I voted (absentee) for a measure that allowed the county I grew up in to borrow money for certain things, like picking up the trash at my parents' home. My dad, who made me a libertarian, was pissed, lol.

My belief is I should pay for the services I utilize. I don't mind paying the county for, among other things, picking up my trash, and providing law enforcement. I don't mind paying the Feds for the military protection of our nation, etc.

What bugs me is being legally inconvenienced when I'm guilty of nothing, and paying for services I'm not getting. Such as being presumed guilty before boarding an airplane, paying for national defense when our borders are porous, or being profiled as a veteran or gun owner.

Libertarians can be, and largely are, sensible folks. We get categorized by a few bad apples.

My family happens to have originated in Nogales and I still have relatives down there, so I have been stopped by Border Patrol on more than a few occasions.  Honestly, if all they are doing is asking if you're an American Citizen just respond with "yes sir," show them an ID and move on with life.

I'm the same way with any LEO. If you answer a few simple questions in a civil and even friendly manner, you might find the cop responding the same way. Theres no sense in starting something over nothing.

I firmly believe that it's the other way around.  Check out a 2A rally some time.

Be wary of people quick to label themselves.  I believe what I believe.  Some of that may fit into Republican views, some Libertarian, some maybe even Democrat.  Whatever.  My view have one label:  Mine.

What I love is that a lot of self-described Anarchists are actually pretty durned statist when you look at what they actually want, as opposed to purport to believe.

"I'm an anarchist who believes in no government authority, and I want my free, taxpayer-provided healthcare and I want it NOW."

Most anarchists would never survive long in true Anarchy and have no idea of all of Anarchy's ramifications. I say find a deserted island and give it to them.
