Dad Furious After Finding This Crayon-Written Paper in Florida 4th-Grader’s Backpack: ‘I Am Willing to Give Up Some of My Constitutional Rights…to Be Safer’
By Madeleine Morgenstern | The Blaze – 8 hrs ago

The words are written in crayon, in the haphazard bumpiness of a child's scrawl.

"I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure."

They're the words that Florida father Aaron Harvey was stunned to find his fourth-grade son had written, after a lesson in school about the Constitution.

Aaron Harvey's son wrote as part of a school lesson, "I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure." TheBlaze has redacted the child's name.

Harvey's son attends Cedar Hills Elementary in Jacksonville, Fla. Back in January, a local attorney came in to teach the students about the Bill of Rights. But after the attorney left, fourth-grade teacher Cheryl Sabb dictated the sentence to part of the class and had them copy it down, he said.

    Wow  :shocked

I think I'd give them an opportunity to explain themselves - hopefully they were in the process of illustrating exactly what's wrong with that kind of thinking. If they fail on that though, I think I'd be doing everything possible to make sure that everyone involved becomes a highly illustrative example of how to fluff up your life.

On the one hand, this would definitely result in a family lesson on the perils of tyranny, the reality of certain slippery slopes, etc.

On the other, I am sure if you were to put us all in a room some of us (Me, Deathrider, Nukmed come to mind) would feel that some others were definitely already compromising certain constitutional rights for the greater good.

Case in point, I bet I wouldn't have to go outside this thread to find people that are pretty much OK with crew served artillery being on the no-no list.  Yet, when the 2A was framed, the attempts of the British to seize crew served artillery were right on the top of the list of arms they wanted the constitution to protect.

No doubt, given the environment and the sheep-le we meet each day the teach needs a serious  :bash.

But I think challenging our core philosophies and deciding in our minds how we define and defend the box we hav chosen to stand for is worthwhile too.

If you want to go buy an artilery piece go for it I don't care. Just don't shell my house. The same could be said of any gun though, just don't do a drive by on my house. If anything I am less worried about the artiliery as, good luck hiding that crime. I think the artilery will be rather conspicuous.

T beat me to it!!!  Can't get to WTA at work.  GRR....

As for being off the reservation pissed?  YEAH...........   Some days I'm glad I don't have children yet.  Couple this incident with that Melissa Harris-Perry commentary from the other day, and I just don't know what to think.

That father handled it well.  I really don't know if I would have had the amount of restraint it took to not head straight for the school and have a little conference.

It wasn't me who elected the people who voted to restrict ownership of artillery, or machine guns, or tanks.  I WANT people to own those things.  Because I feel we are getting to the point where we may need them.

Sadly, this is nothing new or surprising. The idjits had me writing letters to Clinton when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade. The topic? Why land mines are eeevvvvviiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll and I think they should be banned. Wait...whats a landmine? And why shouldn't I like them? Oh, don't worry about that dear just write your letter.

Every time I look back and recall that I get a little pissed.

Agree completely.  That teacher, and any others who do the same, needs to be removed from the educational system.  And seriously needs a good old-fashioned country @$$-whuppin'.

I saw this last night - I was angry just reading it.  My kids go to a very pro-founders pro-constitution school, thats why we chose it, but they all got sat down last night and spoke about the nature of RIGHTS and freedom.

I would have my child cross out the above words and write this below it. Then turn it back into the idiot before changing teachers.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Yeah, I was thinking that re-doing it with the Ben Franklin quote and just turning it in would be a fun way to go. Depends on how much your kid likes to brawl with his teachers. The problem with doing that sort of thing is that we get angry when they use our kids as pawns on the one side, but we're cool with doing it ourselves. Granted, as parents we have a heck of a lot more right to do it than a teacher does, but it still doesn't make it OK. I'd prefer to just storm into the office with a "WTF is this S?" unless my kid was 100% on board with fighting.

Sometimes I am very thankful I never fathered any crumbcrunchers  rugrats -- er, children.
When I was a kid we learned that we could have a very peaceful, orderly society but had, instead, decided it was better to put up with the vicissitudes of freedom....BTW the "peaceful orderly society" I refer to above wasn't what WE called it forty years ago.
WE called it a "police state."
Kudos to those above who would set the teachers straight.

Were the exact rights to be given up mentioned?
Or could the children discuss abandoning their 13th Amendment rights in exchange for safety?

Its been off the rails for a while now, but you'd think they'd try and play it at least a little bit sneaky for a while longer.  I can only hope they continue to nakedly reveal their true intentions.  Then again, I keep falling into the trap of thinking, you know, when XYZ happens, people will really wake up and see how foolish the path we are on is, but I haven't really believed that for a long time.

Once in a while I just look around and wonder what happened.  I know what happened, but it doesn't leave me any less bewildered.

I don't think so, but I would guess that the "primary" rights are those protected by somewhere between amendment #1 and #3.
Of course, free speech and freedom of religion have also to a degree or another come under attack recently.
