I love me some History Guy! That's a great youtube channel. I've been subscribed to it for quite awhile.

I'd love to see a youtube channel dedicated to lessons learned from The Great Depression. My grand parents grew up during the depression but they are gone now and much of what they knew has been forgotten. 

I got used to those during our visit to Thailand, but they use a sprayer like is attached to a sink here in the States.

My wife did not.

I think my son would be tempted to use it to spray one of the cats.

My wife actually stocked up on a lot of stuff at Costco, about two weeks before the panic hit.

We're good on most stuff for now.

Those are the ones to which I was referring.  My wife is Thai, coincidentally.
Those are also the sort used in the Middle East.

Really, they're quite good once you grow used to them. for a number of reasons.
My late father was put on stool softeners after his heart surgery (to prevent straining) and was getting...shall we say...raw...as a result until my wife suggested he try the handheld bidet I installed at his place while we had been visiting.   He pronounced it a stroke of genius.

Isan?

Kata Village... they live within sight of the Big Buddha.

I meant to ask if she originally came from Issan (NE Thailand).   
My...cousin-in-law*... has a condo in Phuket with her Danish husband.

1- Yes, she's from Issan.  They're also considered the "rednecks" of Thailand. My wife qualifies  Mostly rice farmers and a huge source of those who work as ex-pats.    They work hard and they party hard.   
2- Yup, Lao (aka Laotion) Whiskey.   The Issan region borders Lao, a communist and very poor country.  How poor you ask?  So poor that booze smuggled in over the border into Thailand is still cheaper than Thai booze.      Folks from Issan will also use the term to describe their moonshine.   It's very smooth
If you can handle Lao Whiskey without becoming an ass, vomiting, or dying from a hangover they're mentally putting you in the category of someone not to be messed with. .

If you have the chance to go back, spend more time in the village and don't be shy about sponsoring parties and cook outs.   You'll have a blast, learn lots more about the real culture, and develop REAL bonds.   Seriously, cement yourself into the local dynamic and you've effectively got the entire village as backup from now until the end of time.  Anything from being picked up at the airport to a battalion of angry Thai's with enaps at your back.

My father grew close to my in-laws and made a number of trips there and just enjoyed the village life.
When he passed unexpectedly from liver cancer here in the US the village held a funeral in Thailand. 
When we sent some of his ashes back (at their request) they had a small shrine/ash house ready for him at the village's monastery.   They leave offerings for him (coffee + toast) every morning,  and on holidays they bring the ashes to the home to sit in the room while everyone parties.   The village children miss the "farang Yak" who would buy them ice cream, the adults miss the foreigner who would keep an eye on the rug rats in the center of the village.

It's a good part of the world.

I would honestly rate myself as happily drunk, with no vomiting, and a very slight hangover (had enough presence of mind to drink a fair amount of water before going to bed).  Mild headache, and my stomach was a little iffy, but nothing some rice and breakfast couldn't cure.

We were there for my BIL's Buddhist wedding - they'd gotten married five years before, in the States, but she wanted a wedding at home. So, for their fifth anniversary, they did. We went, as his family representatives. Took lots of baby clothes that my son had grown out of, toys, etc., to give out to the village.  They had a band, with dancers, on a semi flatbed stage, lots of lights.  We weren't staying in the village, we were at the equivalent of a motel a few miles away.

I think Thailand handles marriage better than most western nations. 
In Thailand the government doesn't marry you.  They record the deed after it's occurred.   If you're Buddhist*, the monks marry you. If you're Christian, your pastor marries you.   Whatever.   
Once you're married, if you decide you want the govt involved ypou go to the Ampur (Registrar) and register the marriage as a fait acompli.   If you don't care about that you don't bother.  Socially no one will care.
If we handled it that way in the west much drama would be eliminated.

Really, I hope you had a great time.  It's a different culture that has it's own flaws, but it's also one which seems to adapt well to the necessities of life and caring for family. 

Interesting conversation.  I've never been to Thailand but it sounds like a fascinating place.  Everyone I have met here in the states from there have been solid, stand-up, hard working kind of folks.  I would like to know more of them. 

That said, I wish people ( here ) would have as much respect for other people's culture and traditions - even if they live in a different state - as they do foreign countries' when they are abroad.  Might take some of the edge off our interpersonal relations of late.
