P-39, one of the original hot rod gunships.  It handled different so US air corp pilots did not like it, but was a good plane.

Interesting aircraft for sure.  They have one on display here in Arizona down at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson.  I think it is one of the later "Q" models with quite a few improvements over the initial production run(s). 

I think the Soviets used more of them than everybody else combined as they used them at lower altitudes and liked the ground handling characteristics of the fighters on grass and dirt fields near front line battles.  The U.S. pilots coming from planes like the Curtiss P40's had trouble with them because the flight characteristics were quite different.  They were pretty quickly outclassed as air superiority fighters in western Europe and the Pacific theater as well and they never caught on with the Navy since with the tricycle landing gear they were completely unsuited to WWII aircraft carrier operations.

I have also read they had some troubles with overheating. Which should have been less of an issue for the Russians.

The mechanics of the plane are super interesting. The mid-engine design and the larger cannon thru the prop was out of the box thinking for sure.

 Always kind of liked the ugly ducklings, the under-appreciated planes of the time.   The P-39 definately fit the category.
