Title: Obtaining auto insurance after many years abroad?
Post by: LowKey on April 22, 2020, 02:13:50 am
I thought I'd throw this out there for the hive mind-

I last had insurance coverage back in 2004, then dropped it after I went overseas and sold the vehicle.
Over there I was either driving government owned vehicles, company supplied vehicles, or rental cars which came with their own insurance.

Now that we've been back in the states a while we're looking at buying a vehicle, but I'm trying to avoid getting gouged on insurance rates.   I seem to recall that rates can be fairly harsh if you're considered previously "uninsured".
I'm 50, with a squeaky clean driving record and she's 34 with a clean record as well.

Any suggestions?

An independent agent can shop many companies instead of trying to make one company's offering fit your situation.  Might be a good place to start asking questions.  USAA might be helpful if you are a veteran or active duty military.  Beyond that I'm out of ideas.  :hmm

With your past military service, you should be able to get USAA (which I have, through my father's service).  Very good rates, and I've never had cause to complain about how they treat me.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I'm not even sure if my rates will be higher simply because I haven't had a policy in over a decade, it's just something I vaguely recall hearing way back when and I may be mis-remembering.

Let us know how this turns out - at your convenience.  Given the massively reduced number of miles being driven over the last few weeks I imagine auto insurance companies are doing quite well at the moment.  Hopefully they appreciate your business.

To my shock and pleasant suprise I discovreed there is something called " Non-owner Auto Insurance".
I (age 50) and my beautiful bride (age 34) are now covered by USAA for the low price of $38 per month.
This will count as continuous coverage when we purchase and insure a motor vehicle.

Please remember this so you may pass it along to anyone you know who is returning from a deponent or many years abroad for other reasons.
