My knee hurts
« on: April 17, 2013, 10:39:49 pm »
Mostly when I bend it. Also my hip sometimes. And I can't hear. What? Back when I was a kid...

No seriously. My knee hurts almost constantly. It's a fairly recent development. I don't need advice, I just thought you all should know.
I'm not saying you should use an M1A for home defense, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.

Welcome to the party!  I've been dealing with that in both knees for about 25 yrs.

Yeah, I get that sometimes. Hyper-extended one of mine back when I was a kid and it acts up on me every once in a while.

I long for the days when I only had knee pain.  Just wait for hand pain, elbow pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, hip pain, foot pain, ass pain...

It never gets any better brother.

My back/hip is my problem.   Especially on my left side.  It has bothered me ever since I was in high school.   Used to be it would start hurting after I spent a few hours on my feet on a hard surface, now it's almost constant, and I even have a boring desk job that doesn't put much strain on it.     I don't know if it is just from being tall, or if it is maybe due to a fight I was in 20+ years ago where I got kicked in the back repeatedly (I lost).

I'm only 32, I always felt like a million bucks until one day a few months ago. My left knee just started hurting out of the blue. No injury besides years of abuse.

We all sound like a bunch of old guys. I'm thinking about getting a walker with tennis balls on the feet.

*shrug* I'm only a year or two older than that; I've been having joint pain in my hands, off and on. Family history of arthritis, so ...  :shrug

It's been more noticeable since the heart surgery last spring, but I think that's because the heart problem was making it difficult to pick up on a lot of minor aches and pains.

Years of abuse?  Yup, that'll do it.  I'm not quite at the walker with the tennis balls, but I am walking with a cane.  I'll be 50, this coming Monday.

I know the feeling, my right knee kills me when I ride the motorcycle and take bumps with my legs rather than back. Hands since I started making holsters are interesting:) I've been going to the chiropractor every 2 weeks for a while now and thankfully he's a gun guy and we trade holsters for cracking:)

I have had knee pain off and on since high school.  Skiing will do that.  Woking out to keep my legs strong and flexable has done a lot to keep it at bay.

In all seriousness I do feel awesome most days, but I've also had physical therapy for my hip (powerlifting injury), shoulder (wrestling), other shoulder (powerlifting), both knees (various), surgery on both legs, and probably a few dings here and there that I'm forgetting.
I think it was Pavel Tsatsouline who told the story of walking into a room full of powerlifters and asking, by show of hands, how many people had a history of shoulder injuries. After 3/4 of the audience members raised their hands he quipped, "the rest of you can't raise your arms above your heads." Like many funny things, it's funny because it's true...
Long story short, I've learned a few things in my 30 years, and that is why I feel better today than I did at 22.

-If you bench, you must also overhead press. This will keep your shoulders balanced.
-Audit your program and make sure you are doing at least as many pulls as pushes. More pulls is perfectly ok.
-Do mobility every morning. My program is based equally on Pavel's book Superjoints and Bob Hoffman's Daily Dozen In particular stretching my hip flexors daily has greatly improved my quality of life.
-If it hurts stop doing it. I used to do VERY high volume pull-ups. My elbows were constantly sore. I cut back the volume and started just doing more weighted pull-ups. My elbows are no longer sore. Hmmm.

Right wrist and left ankle here.  Broke them in seperate events about 2 months apart when I was 21.  The right wrist sounds like it has gravel in it when I move it around certain ways.

Ankle gave me a real bad time when I was in the academy 12 years ago.  I ended up going to a Doctor, and then PT specialist.  It is better now than it was when I was 13 years ago, but it is starting to ache again a couple times a month.

Bad right knee, right hip, history of arthritis in the family, separated my right shoulder a few years back, it sucks getting old, but sure beats the alternative.

I've found a good doctor and a good chiropractor helps, and counter intuitively, keep moving.  I can work out longer in the gym if I walk the dog for an hour earlier in the day.

Heck, I wish mine went bad due to abuse. At least then I'd have had some fun in the process of screwing them up. Around 17/18 my right knee started. Then my shoulder. My left knee is eh. Fun muscle spasms and cramps in my legs on occasion. The joys of crappy genes.

About the only one that has a reason to give me agida is my back due to having pulled the same muscle a few times.

I find staying active really helps with my little aches and pains in the joints.

College football and powerlifting... I am amazed I do not have more pain. Mine is pretty mild, and it stays pretty much at bay if I stay decently active.

Also proper stretching and warming up... It sounds girly but it works.
