Kahr P40 discharges after being dropped

Quote
CENTERVILLE -- A gunshot destroyed a toilet in a fast food restaurant after a man dropped his weapon while pulling up his pants in the bathroom.

Porcelain shrapnel cut the man's arms, according to a Centerville Police news release, but he was not seriously injured.

Police responded to Carl's Jr. at 385 N. 800 West to reports of a shot fired in the men's bathroom. A 26-year-old man, who police did not name and did not cite, was carrying a Kahr P40 handgun, according to the release.

"While pulling his pants up the gun fell out of the holster, striking the floor. When the gun hit the floor, it went off and the bullet struck the toilet," the release states, "shattering it and sending sharp pieces of porcelain flying."

Hmmm.  Should that not have happened?

$20 says he tried to catch it when he saw it falling and grabbed the trigger.

Or he was playing with it... pulled the trigger.  I can not see how a Kahr can possibly discharge if dropped.  You have to pull that trigger all that long way back first.

Even with an Uncle Mike's, if you take the gun out of your waistband and set on on the toilet or the t.p. dispenser or, in my case, in my purse, this simply can't happen.   I'm with those who guessed that he grabbed for it and caught the trigger as he grabbed.

I was wondering what kind of gun that was all day.  Here's another link with some pictures: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=5315514 .  Still, it doesn't help the CCW cause when things like this happen.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

Uncle Mike needs to be taken out and shot for the crappy holsters he's foisted on the public at large that doesn't know what a real holster is. (No offense to anyone here who still uses one, but please see what else is out there)

Anymore I don't think I'd even use one of those holsters things for a glovebox gun - the risk is too high that somebody would on day be tempted to put it on their belt.  :vomit

Funny you mention that.  I keep a CZ P01 in an UM holster in my truck.  The day I got the holster I used a seam ripper to take off the belt loop.

I know a lot of people don't like the Smart Carry, but I wear one, up high around my waist, and one of the nice things about it is that I don't have to worry about the bathroom, it's not an issue.

I've been carrying an Uncle Mike's for over 2 years, and I've used the bathroom a few times since, and I've never had an ND/AD. I set it on the TP holder, so it don't have to worry about retention while I'm raising and lowering my belt. The holster has fine retention when its sandwiched between me and my pants. I am looking for a new holster, likely Galco, but for now the UM is fine.

Perhaps we are looking at this wrong.
Perhaps the blame should be on Carl's Jr's food being greasy enough to put this guy in a hasty, urgent and delicate situation to begin with.

After looking in more depth into the Kahr's mechanism... I still can't see how the pistol discharged.

He had to have been grabbing at it.  I have a Kahr CW9 (it's now a safe queen since I got something else) and like has been said, that pistol has the longest trigger pull of any DAO pistol I've seen (and I have a few different makes and have tried others).

Why the hate for Uncle Mike's holsters?  I've got a couple of their pocket holsters and I think they're comparable to the Desantis Nemesis, and both brands are about the same costwise too.  The Uncle Mike's ones I have don't seem poorly made, and none of them have worn out yet.  What's so bad about Uncle Mike's?
