Interest level in online courses....
« on: October 21, 2008, 02:42:49 pm »
I have been toying with the idea of doing some online seminars. FBMG is going to be selling all of our courses online for people to have access to all over the US. All of our classroom content will be available on disc. But once you get it, how do we answer questions and go over the topics? What about online classes? I will also make this assurance for you. If you dont think that this training is not the best value on the market you will get your money back.

My idea is that the forum would be accessable to members that have purchased the classes and in there we will do our Q&A's and discussions. Here are some of the subjects we are thinking of covering:

Emergency Prep, beyond food staorage
Small unit tactics
Check points and perimeters
Tactical carbine
Defensive Pistol and Mindset
Basic Pistol
Terminal Ballistics

And we are considering a review of Unconventional Warfare Tactics used in an urban setting as seen as Iraq and Afghanistan. Very interesting information and operational techniques.

Sound interesting?

It seems to me that taking courses like that online would be profoundly boring without being able to actually do it. You'd probably sell to a lot of mall ninjas.

Think of it like the Command General Staff College. Most of it is strategy and book learning anyway, and everything you learn you need to take back and practice with your friends. Only a handful of these are designed for range time anyway.

What type of format and content would be included in the online courses?

I think if it was more of a video lecture with visual demonstrations, along with all the written material, you would have a real winner of a project.

Of course this route would be much more expensive to get up and running.  I would be happy to put in some time in the evenings and on weekends to run the camera and help out with visual content (on contingency basis?). Though my web skills are seriously lacking, I am quite handy in the camera and design departments.

Sounds very interesting. What type of pricing would you be imagining for this?

You may want to check out Moodle and Google's OpenMeeting as core technologies in this endeavor.  The openmeeting stuff is really cool.  Gives you video conference/classroom.  Moodle is course management system designed for online training.  They are designed to integrate together, and in some testing we have done where I work, they appear pretty slick.

Unfortunately I was stuck on a different more mundane project writing a custom front end to limesurvey, so I just know the end results, not the steps to get there.

If I have some time, I will play around and try to ping you if I get a test portal set-up.

Ok then. My wife has a system that they already use for web conferencing and trainings at her company that they are ging to allow us to use as well. Right now I am taking the available time off my feet to format the rest of the classes I haven't finished yet in the required formats. But these are live formats, I show you the ppt or slide show and we discuss the slide real time. Then, since you now have the POI (period of instruction) and have been thru the class, you are the SME (subject matter expert, pay attention to these terms as you will hear them again) and now go out and train your group, family, friends or whatever.

It is true that no web based seminar will ever take the place of live training. But in todays day and age, who can afford to take a week off and come to Utah and get hands on? In todays high speed world being exposed to these new training techniques and ideas is often more than half the battle. But you will need to take the info and practice it or impliment it on your own. And of course we are always here to help you.

When I have more info as to pricing and what classes will be ready first, I will post it. But spread the word, you may have friends ready to do these with you.

In the interest of providing you the best possible response-base, I did not abstain from voting just because my answer was no.

Being in IT, I get alot of training all the time from various sources.  More and more vendors are going to Webcasts and online training as a way to cut costs.  However I avoid these due to the simple fact that it becomes very difficult (or impossible) to ask questions, thereby getting the specific answers you need (although, admittedly, a forum could partially solve that issue).

I think an online course is a fine idea, but for my part, I would be unlikely to use it.  When I'm paying for it, I prefer hands-on instruction (easy to say when I live in Arizona, eh?  ;)).

Of course "free" is a completely different matter.  But I do not understand that we are speaking from that angle, and I would expect your valuable time and expertise to come at a (fair) price.

First post on the new board. I am liking this place already :)

I would definitely be interested in some online courses. Living in Tennessee makes it difficult to take a week off and get out to Utah as you said, online courses though could offer some real potential. If they are live events, it would certainly work better to have them evenings than during the day.

I would definitely be interested. Do you have any timeline in mind for these courses yet? Maybe you should start a mailing list to keep people informed of updates and course availability. :)

I would be interisted in Small unit tactics, Check points and perimeters, Emergency Prep, beyond food staorage and, a review of Unconventional Warfare Tactics.

Tactical carbine, Defensive Pistol and Mindset and, Basic Pistol I think would be better done in person. I base that theory on the defensive pistol and mind set course I took from you.
