hip replacement surgery tomorrow
« on: November 04, 2008, 11:00:08 am »
well, tomorrow I go in for my left hip replacement surgery.  This is happening way before it should (I'm only 36...) but is absolutely necessary.  I'm not looking forward to it as hospitals scare the crap out of me and I'll be admitted for at least 3 days.  I guess you can say that I am fishing for thoughts & prayers as I would appreciate any good vibes coming my way.  Wish me luck!!!

Best of luck  :) May you be surrounded by beautiful nurses and plenty of narcs

I have been through 7 surgeries myself and I'm only 31 so I know where you're coming from, it's never easy. Also if you're anything like me once you have had the surgery you will be able to tell the weather changes better than a meteorologist. (not as cool as it sounds however).

Just remember, after surgery, ignore your hip when it tells you to find Sarah Conner.

Seriously, best of luck though I'm sure you won't need it.

I had hip surgery 4 years ago at the age of 67.  I was operated on Mon and they had me up that night.  I went home Weds morn.  I was on a walker for 1 and a half weeks and then with a cane for another week and that was it.  The trick is rehab exercise within 24 hours and never baby yourself.  I had a great Dr. who took less than 30 minutes and the scar is less than 4 inches.  His method is called the mini-incision and he teaches other Dr's.  No pain, no restrictions and I don't limp.  Man, do I set off those metal detectors at security places!  My only regret is that I thought I could stick a refrigerator magnet to my hip for laughs, but it doesn't work.

I will pray for you.  God bless.

    For God and Country,

Good luck with your surgery.  I don't know what the impetus for the surgery is in your case, but I certainly understand hip pain.  I had Legg-Calve Perthes as a kid and have had off-and-on pain and limping ever since.  No running for me!  I know you're already on the conveyor belt, so to speak, but an ER doc friend of mine recently recommended to me that I look into whether I would be a candidate for the Birmingham HIP procedure http://www.randallschultzmd.com/birmingham.html rather than having a total replacement done as I've been considering for a couple of years now.

Good luck, and do as your torturer (PT) instructus you to do.

Best luck.  Easy for me to say, but remember that for the doctor's this kind of thing really is just another day at the office.  They do 'em all the time, and the vast majority of the time it all works the way it is supposed to.

Here's hoping it makes a huge difference in your life once it's all over.

You can't fool us.  We know you are going for the ULTIMATE concealed carry holster and are using the hip replacement story as a cover.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words & thoughts.  This will be my 11th surgery and the 2nd one on my left hip.  I have a bone disease in both of my hips which is causing the bones to deteriorate and collapse.  I wish that there was another alternative but this is the only fix in my case.  This was one of the medical problems that caused my early retirement from the Air Force and it is already to the point that I am a burden on my wife.  I am a stay at home dad to our 9 month old daughter, so at least I am able to help out in that way.  Again thanks for all of your support...it does mean a lot to me that others actually do care.

Good luck, Matt. I haven't had any surgery since I was 2, but I'm with you on the hospital thing. I hate them too. But we all know you'll come out better than you went in, so keep that in mind. Prayers are on the way.

I just wanted to let everyone know that it's been a week since I've been home from the hospital and so far so good.  Recovery is slow.  I would've never imagined how much I took for granted before I got cut...simple walking (I have to use a walker), lying in bed and even to sitting on a toilet.  This still sucks and will continue to suck for at least another month.  I do appreciate everyone's thoughts & prayers as they never go unnoticed.  My wife is still hanging in there.  For her to take care of me right now is maybe just short of a very elderly grandperson.  I was a stay at home dad and right now that is one of the toughest things to adjust to because I just can't take care of our daughter.  Well, 1 week down already and hopefully I'll be able to use a walking cane shortly.  My goal is to be able to get around the next gun show which is the first weekend in December.  I need to stock up on ammo...that stuff is going FAST because of jackass.

Matt, glad to hear you're back home and already a week has gone by.  Hopefully the next few weeks will go by fast and pain free.  You and your family are still in my prayers.

Hang in there, Matt.  You'll see daily improvement and will be back to caring for your baby in no time.

As for being a drag on your wife....well, if she got hit by a bus and was laid up, would you consider her a drag on you?  Doubt it.  And likewise I doubt she does either.  Doesn't mean she doesn't get tired and look forward to your recovery, but that's a lot different than being a lodestone around her neck.

    Prayers going up.
