DAVE PICKS GILLIBRAND AS LIBERAL DEMS HOWL
January 23, 2009

ALBANY - Gov. Paterson, defying the liberal wing of his Democratic Party, has chosen little-known, NRA-backed, upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as New York's junior senator, it was learned last night.

The surprising - and, for many Democrats shocking - decision to pick the conservative Gillibrand, 42, from Hudson in Columbia County, was disclosed by the governor in calls to party officials and some members of the state's congressional delegation, many of whom said they were unhappy with the selection, sources said.

Gillibrand, a mother of two occasionally resented by colleagues for being an aggressive self-promoter, was strongly backed for the post by Charles Schumer, the state's senior senator, who said a woman and an upstater was needed on next year's ticket.

Paterson's decision - to be officially announced today at noon at the state Capitol - was made just 24 hours after Caroline Kennedy took herself out of the running.

The decision was a major rebuff to some of the state's best-known Democrats interested in Clinton's seat, including Attorney General and former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, for whom Gillibrand once worked as a junior lawyer; Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and Reps. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Steve Israel of Suffolk County.

Sources said "at least five" members of the state's Democratic congressional delegation called Paterson to protest the possibility of Gillibrand's selection. One, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of Nassau County, even threatened a primary challenge. Gillibrand faces a special election in 2010.

Democratic activists predicted that Cuomo, son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, would also "seriously consider" challenging Paterson in a primary next year.

Calls were made from Paterson's office to leading Democrats and Republicans throughout the afternoon, inviting them to a special meeting room attached to the Capitol for "a major announcement."

The inclusion of several prominent Republicans among the invitees was an early sign to insiders that Paterson planned to pick an upstate Democrat.

Gillibrand has won two successive elections in one of the heaviest GOP districts in the state, first upsetting incumbent Rep. John Sweeney and, in November, defeating former state GOP chairman and multimillionaire Alexander Treadwell, in one of the most expensive races in the nation.

Liberal Democrats have been wary of her because she ran for re-election with the backing of the National Rifle Association, opposed the federal TARP program to rescue banks, and has been less than enthusiastic about gay marriage.

From what I have heard Gillibrand supports the 2A in so far as hunters rights are concerned but supports gun control in general.

Well, Hillary was a foe of the 2A in every way possible, much like Carolyn McCarthy - our profanity rules prevent me from adequately describing my hatred for that woman.

Gillibrand has a "C" from GOA - so there is plenty of room for improvement.  She is, however, amazingly less of a radical leftist than we had a right to expect to come out of New York.

McCarthy's the woman who said "it's the thing that goes up on the shoulder" (or words to that effect) when asked about a barrel shroud, isn't she?

"Shoulder thing that goes up," is what she thought was meant by a "barrel shroud."

ETA: Beamish got the video while I was posting.

She also uses the term "clip" which infuriates me when used to discuss magazines. One of my pet peeves. The largest "clip" I know of is the SKS stripper clips, which hold 10rds. Not even Hi-cap by her definition.

I thought she was the one. Darned if I would have gone on national TV and admitted that I'd basically tried to ban anything on a firearm that I thought looked scary, but if not having a clue what you're talking about stopped anybody in Congress from doing anything, most of them would have to resign and go home tomorrow.

    Barrel Shroud FAIL.

At least Clinton's replacement is somewhat pro-gun.  That is a start.

FMJ, I think you're going to have some FTF. ;) Oh, and a few rounds are missing half of themselves.

I don't think much of this senator pick, but that's way better than the utter contempt I feel for what has been and in places still is in NY.
If I saw a guy with a 60cu/ft safe filled to the brim with nothing but Jennings, Lorcins and Hi-Points, I'd look at the guy and say "Right on brother".

I agree with Beamish. It beats what was there and probably more considerate of 2A than Sweet Caroline would have been.

I know, and the magazine on my (future) Mosin would not be able to hold this many.

I just wanted a quick way of making fun of the evil high capacity clips that are wrecking havoc by youth gangs in the streets of America today.

One thing that ticks me off that the antis do aside from semi auto EBR b_tching, is how they consider handguns to be an entirely new level of evil.  I guess cops must be evil too.

The new senator has Schumer's backing.  Whatever game he's playing, whoever's eye he's poking, he would not make the mistake of pushing a 2A adherent.  She claims support for 'hunters' rights', and that she's part of a 'hunting family'.  If she wants to sit in that comfy senate chair beyond the unexpired term, she will absolutely toe the line on AWB/licensing/registration/new classes of prohibited persons, etc.  And Schumer will laugh his flabby ass off as this NRA A-Lister votes to ban your weapons.  The blather spewing from the execrable McCarthy woman is just a sideshow.

So, no net gain for the 2nd, situation normal all fouled up.

Now that she has to court down-State votes in her 2010 election bid to retain her newly appointed Senator's seat she has suddenly developed a "Zumbo" attitude on the 2A.

Complete and utter political garbage.  She disgusts me more than Hillary at the moment.

    Quote from: Taoist story
There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit.

"Such bad luck," they said sympathetically.

    "We'll see," the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses.

    "How wonderful," the neighbors exclaimed.

"We'll see," replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

    "We'll see," answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son's leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

    "We'll see" said the farmer.
