Gun Stores in Wichita Falls, TX?
« on: August 17, 2013, 01:28:46 pm »
Okay, so I find myself in the Wichita Falls, TX area for the next few days.  I have the weekend off, so I think to go find a gun store to poke around in.  I just got back from Europe and haven't been able to just browse a gun shop in a long time.

So I ask Siri to find me a gun store.  She obliges, and directs me to Defoor's Gun Shop on 8th Street.

It's been closed for quite some time.  :facepalm

As a matter of fact, the whole area looks like it's seen better days.

Okay, wow, I feel like I'm in The Walking Dead:shocked

EDIT: If anyone is interested, apparently that blue building is for sale for like $795,000.  :hmm

So, um, are there any open gun stores in the Wichita Falls area?  I don't want to go to a seedy pawn broker or anything, I mean an actual gun store. Anyone know?

Are you at Sheppard or just in town for other reasons? I was there for 7-Level school and found the place... boring.

I don't know about gun shops, but if I was there I'd be getting a workout in at the Wichita Falls Athletic Club.

I'm at Sheppard.  These little Tech School kids are so adorable, with their reflective belts and black backpacks.  I'm seriously going to stop one of them and ask him what he's carrying in that pack that he just can't live without, even when he's going to the Shoppette.

Are there no gun stores in a reasonable radius of this place?

Last time I was there was for 7-level and that was almost two years ago so this may be a tad outdated. I did find a hole in the wall shop over by the Hastings.  I think it's off of Kemp, but its been a while.

I was there in 1999-2000 timeframe coming over from Misawa and we had a good time messing with the young people right out of Basic. I remember them locking it up in the hallways against the wall and asking them for a 341 which of course they didn't have which sent them into a panic. Coming from overseas no one had a car so getting around relied on other classmates that drove to there, and there were very few that did.

I've spent time shooting there, never been gun shopping there. And the club I shot at doesn't have an FFL.

I gave up.  This town seriously feels like it's dying of old age.  The economic turndown hit this area hard, it seems.

I saw some Air Force kids at the mall with their black backpacks.  What on earth do they keep in there, that they can't leave at home for a few hours?  :scrutiny

I have lived in Texas before, but never went through that town.  Go old school and ask a good ole' boy wearing cowboy boots and/or a cowboy hat where to go to.

I know a guy who's an instructor at the electrical schoolhouse, sorry it took a while to dig the guy up on Facebook.  The contents of the bag vary, but are supposed to include the following:

    Reflective belt
    "Lackland Laser"
All weather coat.  That is the ugly blue trench coat that is supposed to be worn with Blues but for some reason they have the pipeliners wear them with ABUs.
If they happen to be an electrical student they will probably have a pair of climbing boots.

He shoots black powder only and has no idea if there is a gun shop in town.

You know, I didn't even think to check the big box stores.  I found an Academy Sports today and checked out their selection.

They had a smattering of DPMS and Bushmaster ARs, a bunch of Remchester bolt action hunting rifles, a few shotguns (most of them looked like Turkish imports), and a selection of .22s.  One Daniel Defense M4 stood out.

Their handgun selection was poor.  Couple Glocks, one XD, couple Berettas, some Tristar Turkish CZ clones.  Taurus had more examples on display than any other one maker.  1911s from different companies, the most expensive being a Para USA Black Ops double stack (at about $1200).  Couple Sig 226 types, too, and some S&Ws.

Revolver selection was terrible.  There were exactly two centerfire revolvers, a Charter and one S&W, that weren't made in Brazil.  The rest were Taurus (polymer framed snubbies and the Judge), Rossi, and one weird BrazTech .44 Magnum 5-shot snubby. More .22s were on display than centerfires.

Ammo selection, aside from shotgun ammo, was also poor.  They wouldn't let you buy handgun ammo unless you were also buying a gun in that caliber, apparently.

    Overall?  Meh.

They did have a S&W SD9VE and 40VE for sale for $319.00, which is really good for a big name centerfire semiauto.  I'm going to have to snag a 9mm version one of these days.

Academy has been keeping the "popular calibers" behind the customer service counter. Not the gun counter. You gotta ask for your 9mm, .40, .45, .22LR, .223/5.56, 7.62 (might have missed one or two) at the checkout at customer service.

As for the gun selection (I've been in that Academy, and many others) they stock what's popular among the "non-gun nut" gun owner crowd. They're a big box store, not a gun shop, and stock the gun section accordingly.
