I think I'd prefer malamutes for sledding.  Slower, but they can pull a lot more.

I had an interest in collies for a while, with plans for frisbee.  Wasn't planning on one for a first dog, but I did find these guys:

    Anyone else heard of them?

Shephard mixes must be one of the best all around dogs.
We once had a shephard / collie - smartest and best behaved dog ever, with a genuine personality.

What's wrong with Mother Nature, that stupid wench.
She gives dogs only ten or so years and gives alligators fifty.

I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?

Though I love Great Pyrs, we had someone ask us if we wanted a two year old German Shepherd who's owner couldn't keep him anymore.  My son named him Zayne, and everyone's still getting used to each other.  We're about to move to a new home/farm and he should be happy there.  He's a really sweet dog, here's a pic:

Zayne has been really eager to please, quite a difference from the Great Pyr we had who was quite "opinionated".

    Ha,

He's eager to please because he's still thinking of himself as a guest and lucky to be there.
    Wait awhile.
Soon, he'll be hiding your shoes, grabbing steaks off the table and napping in your bed with his head on the pillow.
Waggin' his tail all the while, of course.
    It won't take long.

I have several dogs but my favorite by far is my Olde English Bulldog.  Think of a "classic" bulldog but he can actually breathe and has long legs.  His name is "Egor" named so because of a cleft lip that leaves his bottom tooth out all the time.  I have been told that he is so "ugly hes cute".  Heres a good pic of just how bad his cleft lip is and just how ugly he can be.   :rotfl

Dammit I just spent 10 minutes typing a long response and there was an error and it got erased.   :banghead

Ok so for those that dont know Egor is an OLDE English or LEAVITT Bulldog.  They are a return to the athletic dogs used in bull baiting, (the dog would actually take down and sometimes kill a full grown bull).  Egor is about 22" at the shoulder and weighs around 80 pounds.  He can run and play with "his kids" for hours without any negative effects.  The Olde English Bulldog is very sturdy without an aggresive gene in his body while being incredibly strong.  It takes three people to hold him down just to cut his nails.  For some reason he hates that and its the only thing he wont yout you do to him.

The standard "ENGISH Bulldog" is the one you see in movies.  Short, snorting and usually seen sleeping while snoring and farting.

Here is a pic of Egor when he was still a pupy but it really shows how long his legs are.  For reference he is sitting in "his" large Lazy boy recliner.

Is that a cleft palate?  Or just his lip?  Is it problematic for him at all?

Its both.  he does have a cleft pallet but it is closed and doesnt cause him any problems with food.  (For those that dont know a cleft pallet can cause eating problems and even be fatal in a dog).  The lip is cleft all the way into his nose.  He actually has teeth going up into his nose if you pull back the lip.  Makes it interesting because I have to brush his teeth so it doesnt rot.  The only problem he had was a puppy he couldnt latch onto his momma so he was extremely underdeveloped when I got him.  He had to be bottle fed and he was only 3 pounds when his littermates were 20 pounds.  I honestly thought he was a retarted chiuahaha for a minute when my wife brought him home.  lol  Because he didnt get good nutrution as a puppy we think his brain didnt devlep right and he is extremly scared of any loud noise.  If a car starts he runs for home so I cant walk him but hes happy in his house.

Well, the loud noise thing isn't all that uncommon in dogs that grow up inside and aren't accustomed to it.

That's a great thing to hear that he's well cared for and loved.  Warms my heart and it ALWAYS restores a little faith in my fellow man.

    Good deal brother.

can you tell they aren't fond of cats?

And these are my Black Lab doggies.

I think you've posted that one before.  Funny.

But... even though I detest cats, I kinda feel for the kitty.  He can't stay up there all day terrified for his life, which would sure end if he were to fall.

    ...

What?  Huh?  Did I say that?  :nervous
