Colorado Shooting
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:34:52 am »
If you haven't checked the news already, now's the time.  Mass shooting at a Colorado showing of the new Batman movie, right now they're saying 14 dead and 50 wounded, suspect in custody.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/07/20/several-reportedly-dead-injured-after-shooting-at-colorado-movie-theater/

Colorado, you're in my prayers.

The whole thing well and truly sucks.

The left is already screaming for gun control.

    Convenient timing.

If I were a believer in things like MK-ULTRA, I'd start wondering who programmed this kid to execute this action.

Note he does not attempt to flee.  His sits and waits for the cops.

As an investigator on the case, I'd be looking for a psych connection, and then I'd be looking into the psych's funding.

Way too convenient.  Just at a point when the dot-gov is angling to get an arms-restrictive UN treaty adopted.

    It smells.

Yes, I know, sometimes a crazy is just a crazy.

And sometimes border agents just get randomly murdered by gangs using arms they got from an illegal shadow operation.

And sometimes, just sometimes, it's not as random as it will be sold.

One thing you can count on, though:  Schumer will blame the guns.  Hillary will "reluctantly" observe that it's just another "unfortunate" indication that we need a treaty.

And no one at all will look at this kids "mental health" history, and no one will look into his "treatments."

    Because . . . why would you?

I have read the anti's comments a few places.
The thing that gets me, if the guy would have plowed into the line waiting outside in a 1 ton pick up truck... the idea of banning or restricting vehicles would NEVER cross their minds.
I look at a firearm as a tool, the same as any other.
It can be used for good and for bad... just like any other.
It is the person wielding the tool that is good or bad.
Ban people from being bad... this will solve all of the problems.

The theater may have been a gun free zone or something like that. I haven't confirmed this yet but thats what several pundits are saying.

It might be worth seeing if the guy has a history of mental problems, because it might mean information isn't being passed along to the NICS database properly (i.e. if the guy had been committed at some point, but was able to buy one or more firearms through an FFL later). Crazy is as crazy does, though. I'd be downright amazed if there was anything more to it than that.

Personally, I'd guess the guy was looking for attention, and settled on this as the surest way to get some.

That seems possible, but I'd want indepedent confirmation. All the theaters here are sure posted, though.

It probably is. Most of them are. What is truly galling is that the police were already on scene for crowd control. I'm not denigrating their response- I'm using this to show that in the very best-case scenario (armed cops, already outside of the facility) can still result in 12 dead and 60-ish injured.

The theater was a Century 16, under the Cinemark umbrella.
They are a no guns company.

Even with the cops at the theater for crowd control, they'd be outside and especially in front.  The shooter came in through an emergency exit, and I'll be it was on the back side of the building.

The whole thing speaks to a pretty decent level of planning - acquiring the smoke/CS grenades (I've seen it described variously as either 'noxious' smoke or tear gas.  Anyone who's been in the military knows that the smoke from standard smoke grenades is pretty nasty on it's own) gas mask, and rigging the door of one of the theaters being used for the midnight screening so it could be opened from the outside.  That last says that he either got info or perhaps even assistance from a cinema employee.

But with the cops around front, and him walking in the back, emptying a semi-auto shotgun, and at least one magazine from a semi auto rifle and possibly one or two pistols before the cops could react wouldn't be much of a trick.

And those stadium seating type theaters, which I'm sure would be the ones used for a big event like a midnight screening, are like a shooting gallery for anyone standing near the screen.  Everyone up there has to come down toward the shooter before they can get out.

Yes on all counts. Nightmare scenario. The only hope for a low bodycount is that someone up front has a gun and knows how to use it.

I forgot to add that the shooter had some sort of flak vest/body armor.  So you might well need a head shot - in poor lighting, with smoke, and surrounded/jostled by screaming people trying to get out of the line of fire.

Oh, and he apparently booby-trapped his apartment, on top of everything.

As an aside, I just shake my head at how the Fox news story (link above) states that he 'kicked down' the emergency door.  Emergency doors, per every fire code everywhere, open outward.  And especially on commercial structures, they're almost always metal, with metal frames.  You'd need a lot of time to get one open with a properly equipped breach team without using explosives.  One guy isn't just going to kick it open.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of using duct tape (Watergate, anyone?), with a bit sticking out as a pull tab from the outside, since those exit doors quite often lack handles on the outside.

Well, we now have new meme for munging gun control with First Amendment restrictions:  "hey, you can't just yell open fire in a crowded theater."

As this thing develops, I become increasingly suspicious of this guy's background and connections.

I don't believe now is the time for jokes, Arfin.  Anyway, along with my prayers and thoughts going out to the survivors and family of this sick act, I just turned off CNN after the journalist was talking with the Mayor of the city about what it would take to re-instate the Assault weapons ban.   :facepalm

Rules, signs and bag searches are not going to stop premeditated evil.

There are more good people and decent folks minding their own business, than evil people.  I don't understand why anyone would want to disarm the good decent folks and deny them a fighting chance when evil tries to damage them.

So, because the theater company specifically prohibits all non-LEOs from carrying to defend themselves, should it not be considered liable for the deaths and injuries of the victims?

You can have all the bag checks and metal detectors that you want.
When a person decides to do harm, like this guy coming in thru the back door, they WILL do harm.
It was planned and prepared for by the shooter.
There were police all over the main entrance of the building, he waited for them after he was finished.
The result of this is a tragity, my heart goes out to all of those effected.
    My current curiosity is why.
I know... crazy people do crazy stuff.
This was planned a bit more than a lot of crazy stuff you hear about.
As always, more questions than answers at the moment.

Yes, but you have to remember: we are used to them.

We've either grown up with them, been around them all our lives, or been introduced to them in such a fashion that we know what a gun is, and how it works.

The people who are afraid of weapons are usually only introduced to them through TV or personal experience with crime (i.e., on the bad end).  The same as someone who's never used a tablesaw is going to be leery of it.

Note: I understand that my above statements have nothing to do with the politicians on either side of the issue.  To them, guns are either poisonous vipers poised to kill us all, or national treasures ready to be anointed with holy water and scented oils and worshiped at the altar above all else. There is no middle ground, which is part of the fluffing problem.

    Shutting up now.

Best wishes to all in Aurora.

Yeah, our shop was chosen for an interview by a news station ,41NBC I think, and the interviewer asked about if stricter gun laws would have been effective in preventing that. The guy doing the interview was obviously not from around these parts and seemed genuinely surprised that he couldn't find someone who was in favor stricter gun laws and even outright bans. But anyway, I'm sad for the families of the victims and will pray for them.
