I have come to the conclusion, hard shell packaging does have some redeeming value.

-A kid cannot tear up a new toy, as one cannot get into the packaging to play with  the new toy in the first place.

-Allows one to practice first aid skill sets, after cutting the living daylights out of themselves trying to get into the darn thing.

-If one were to place money and credit/debit cards into these hard-shell packaging:
a) one could not purchase anything, thus saving monies, and b) bad guys would look for easier prey as they could not open it either.

-Sales of bandage scissors has to have gone up, as personally I feel these are the best tools for the opening task.

I am sure others have found redeeming value of these hard shell packages.

One of the neat-o "I saw it on TV" gifts from a few years ago was a specialty cutter that would easily slice through that stuff, and not leave a raw edge.

Wife always cringes when I pull out my knife to open one of those things. I laughed when I saw her pull out her Kershaw to open one at work, at the clinic.  Nitril gloves, and a pocket knife to open sterile packaging.

Sawing through it with a steak knife works pretty well.

I find a pair of tin snips to be quicker, easier, and safer than a knife for opening plastic packages.

Then there's the fifteen friggin' wire ties, holding the item to a piece of the stuff inside. 

Just use a pair of dikes to snip them. Easy peasy.

A good sharp knife cures the problem, zip ties and all.   

I've had the best luck with tin snips and titanium medical shears. Depends which one is closer at hand.

That's been my experience. A sharp knife will take the edges off of clamshell packaging pretty easy.

If that doesn't do it, I've got a mill and a bandsaw.

Always have my knives ready for that clamshell crud.
