you will lose several hours watching

looking at stuff like this, it is simply amazing how many specialized trades there used to be to provide life's necessities............
gunsmith, cooper, wheelwright, blacksmith, wagonwright, farrier, saddler, weaver..................

That she is! Pictures (especially from my kinda-crappy cell phone camera) really do not do her justice.

And just to give you an idea of how big she is, her driving wheels are 5'10" in diameter, same as the height of an average man.

Good one.  Thanks for posting it.   :thumbup1    We've come a long way since that was filmed but whether we went the right direction seems open to debate.   :coffee

MAJOR Necro thread here, I know, but for all the other sh*t we've got going on, at least 2021 is shaping up to be The Year of Steam.

New Year's Eve, Chesapeake & Ohio/Western Maryland Scenic 1309 moved under her own power for the first time in 64 years.

And earlier this week, Reading 2102 had fire in her firebox and pressure in her boiler for the first time in 30 years.  Can't find any videos of the test fire, and she's currently still mostly in pieces right now (just the boiler, frame, wheels, and drivers, no cab, boiler insulation or sheathing, so the pic of her in the mid 80s) but she's alive!

Both locomotives are slated to begin hauling passenger excursion service on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (1309) and the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad/Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad (2102) later this year.  No clear timeline for 1309 as far as I'm aware (WMSR is a tourist short line and the restoration has left it perpetually cash-strapped), but RBM&N says that 2102 should be in regular service by Q3 (RBM&N is a regional freight railroad that is AFAIK rather profitable).  So there's hopefully going to be fresh thunder in the mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Western Maryland come fall!

Raptor, you seem to like train stuff.  Ever seen this one?  Not a blog I usually follow, but the Friday Steam posts are pretty good.

I'm a big steam buff.  I've seen pics and videos of SOO 1003, but never had the opportunity to see her in person or ride behind her.  Some day.

And thanks much for the blog link.  I know what I'm gonna be up all night reading....  ;)

I do alot of shopping at our local ReStore. (Shop that supports Habitat for Humanity)

    https://re-store.org/how-to-restoring-old-hand-tools/
    and https://re-store.org/an-insiders-guide-to-saving-money-on-building-materials/

I've picked up a handful of OLD Craftsman crescent wrenches and a metal body Black & Decker drill.
A little cleaning, some oil and scrub encrusted carbon away = good as new for another 20 years.

Nice.  My father still has most of his old Craftsman tools, and a ShopSmith Mark V that he bought in the early 80s. They all still work.

That IS awesome.  Unfortunately, the handyman gene that my grandfather and father both had appears to have skipped me.  I'm about as handy with tools as Jeremy Clarkson or a drunken orangutan (but I repeat myself).  But it does bring back memories: I spent a not-insignificant part of my youth visiting the Pennsylvania Live Steamers back when they were able to open to the public (stupid insurance companies).  I believe it's the same 7.25" gauge as that gentleman's layout, but the engines and stock were built to a much smaller scale.

And if you'll forgive me for bringing up Norfolk & Western 611 yet again, who has two thumbs and is gonna get to DRIVE her come July?  THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!!

So, you're saying you and Tiger Woods are lot alike in that he can only drive well on the golf course and the only tools you can use well are electronic?    :hmm

Here's another one for those who like trains.  This one runs out of Cass, WV -- wish I'd known about it when I used to travel in WV.  Beautiful country, too.

I saw a Pentrex documentary on Cass Scenic back when I was a kid.  It is a SPECTACULAR ride.  I'm only... [consults Google Maps] ...eh, about 4 hours from Cass.  I'd have to make it a long weekend.  Maybe next year.  I burned pretty much all of my PTO this year on Little Brother's upcoming wedding and my upcoming trip back to Strasburg.  Speaking of which... who has two thumbs and is gonna get to DRIVE N&W 611 in less than two weeks?  [points at self] THIS GUY!!!!!

She's back at the Strasburg Rail Road again, and I was lucky enough to score an Engineer Seat ticket for an In-Cab Experience.

    Excellent & Congrats.

    We expect plenty of pictures.

I'll see what I can do the fine print on the ticket says no photos or video inside the cab, and I'm going by myself, so...  :shrug

But I will definitely post about it when I get back!  I'm super excited!  Driving a steam locomotive (heck, just a cab ride!) has been on my bucket list since I was a little kid.
