. . . even if its the only way to save someone's life.

Seriously.

I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm a little shocked that they just flat out said it.

    Good luck with that.

I don't know why a person with this attitude hasn't been picked clean by the riff-raff. Is it possible that police are ready do harm on his behalf and others in the herd who will use deadly force allow him to hide under his nutshell? Oh, how that must offend his delicate sensibilities!

Ok, buddy. Do us all a favor: don't call the cops. For anything. We roll around with guns, and we shoot people that need to be shot to stop them from doing what they're doing. So, since you believe that no one has the right to kill someone else, even if that killing is required to save an innocent life, put your butt on the line and agree not to call the cops, because we don't care what you think. If we think someone should be shot, we're going to do our best to make that happen. That must be unacceptable to you, so you should not run the risk of having that occur. Deal with your problems yourself.

How does thinking like this survive evolution?

Through hypocrisy. People like this are usually fine with someone else doing violence on their behalf, or at least they'll turn a blind eye to it.

I can respect a genuine pacifist who is willing to really take their faith in God and their fellow man to the fullest possible test, but there are damned few of those around - for obvious reasons.

It doesn't. This fellow is defective. If civilization were to collapse tomorrow, he would be dead or he would have to abandon this position. Civilization keeps him alive by tabling a huge portion of natural selection (namely, the strong do unto the weak and the weak are grateful for being left alive).

I think that guy was an absolute right to refuse to use force to resist force. Who knows? Maybe he will be rewarded in the afterlife for it. What he does NOT have, however, is any right to make the rest of us pay for his choice.

There is a point (which I'm not sure necessarily relates to the views of the guy who was the subject of the OP or not) that should be mentioned - using deadly force in self-defense isn't the same as killing in self-defense.

We use deadly force in order to stop a threat. The goal isn't to kill the assailant. If the threat stops, we're good. Period.

If the assailant dies as a result of someone using as much force as was necessary to stop them, that's sad and regrettable (and responsibility is wholly on the assailant). We're not acting as executioners though.

Absolutely. we act to stop the threat.

If I shoot my assailant and he falls down and dies, I stopped him.
... if he falls over and is saved by the trauma center, I stopped him.
... if I shoot at him and miss and he runs away, I stopped him.
...if I hold him at gunpoint until the cops arrive, with no shot fired, I stopped him.
...if he sees my gun and flees into the night, I stopped him.

Only one of these "deadly force" scenarios involves a death.

This guy, I think, hasn't really thought his position through. It could be his own family that is in danger, and the consequences of failure would be worse than disastrous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire,_Connecticut,_home_invasion_murders

Maybe this guy is in denial of his Monster. http://thelawdogfiles.blogspot.com/2012/12/well-thats-just-splendiferous.html

Denying it won't make it go away, though. It will just ensure that when the Monster comes out, it will be in total control.

True, but we also need to understand that if we are going to shoot someone to save ourselves or a third party, the attacker may very well die because we shot them. We need to make peace with that, and emphasize to ourselves that this is the reason why we only use deadly force in the gravest extreme, and even then we need to really focus on stopping them. But still accept the fact that if you shoot someone, they may die. (Or they might not. That's why you keep shooting until the threat that they present is stopped.)

This is probably all a level of nuance that escapes the average anti-gun pseudo pseudo-pacifist.

Mr. Evil & Co. are always out there trolling, looking for opportunities. They always pick the time and place and we have to play catch-up and react to their acts...

This is an elemental truth that some people never learn until it's too late, ask Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl, oh no you can't, nor can you any number of other victims that "thought it'll never happen to me and if it does, surely someone will intervene in time!"
(Hence the PearllBerg rule: Use your head or else someone will take it from you.)
Here's some ABC type information for us all: It can happen to you or me and it very well might! So be mentally, physically prepared and be educated in all things pertaining.
It's as simple as that. To act in any other fashion is most certainly unwise and possibly suicidal.
