Indeed.  Rifle season around here starts on Monday, so the usual suspects have already started.  My brother was tagging some trees in the woods today, in a light brown carhart.   :facepalm  I told him to go find an orange vest.

I read about the second incident.  Stupid crap I saw hunters do is why finally I gave up hunting except on private land.  This goes beyond stupid.

Being on private land won't stop stupid.  That guy was a) shooting after legal hours and b) failed to identify his target which c) he shouldn't have even been considering a target because a) it was after legal shooting hours.

What makes you think someone that stupid/ignorant/careless will honor private property rights?  Many are the deer who have been killed with a .22 shot from a car via spotlight on the other side of a private property fence and then been dragged back over/under/through.

Stuff like this makes me nervous. My family has two separate plots of land. One is the home in the suburbs where they live and the other is several acres next to grandma out in the sticks. Because they only go out there every week or couple of weeks, we have had trespassers. Given that it is deer season, I would hate to have anyone (i.e. my family) injured on their own property by some jackass who is illegally hunting there.

I knew a Texas DPS Trooper years ago that was hunting on private land with his adult nephew who accidentally shot the Trooper in the leg with a 30-06. The Trooper dang near lost his leg and his life before they got EMS out there. It was about a year later before the Trooper recovered enough to go back to work.

True.  Out here in CA, AZ and NV it seems to me the stupidest stick to "public" land.  Maybe that is because there is so much more of it in the Southwest.

I don't expect the clueless to act otherwise.  However, like I told my daughter when she was learning to drive and got frustrated at some jerk:  That guy will get someone killed and there is very little you can do about it.  One of your tasks on the road is to minimize the chances that someone is you.

My cousin, retired California Fish and Game, tells about arresting a man at the same place on the same animated deer decoy two years in a row.  IIRC it was the same day of the year.  :facepalm

Part of the job of driving is not to let the idiots drive you to do something stupid that puts you and yours at greater risk.

Come and drive in Kuwait for a couple of years; it's like getting a Masters or PhD in defensive and offensive driving.

I am a still hunter.  Usually from a tree stand.  About 20 years ago, I was, for a short time, in a deer hunting club that ran Walker hounds.  Yes, deer hunting with dogs is still legal in Mississippi.  We had about 4,000 acres of land under lease from a timber company.

You'd think it would be safe.  But, once the dogs "jump" a deer and the chase is on, those guys get crazy.  It's like a Chinese fire drill (pardon any political incorrectness), with 4x4 vehicles driving like maniacs through those woods roads, trying to get "ahead" of the dogs and get a shot off before the deer and dogs get too deep into the woods, or God forbid, cross out of the 4,000 acres and on the other side of a public road.

It did not take me very long to realize how stupid and dangerous that type of hunting was.   Although most guys were using shotguns with buckshot or slugs, and the shots were invariably in deep woods at almost CQB distances, it was crazy.  Guys were shooting at anything that moved out in front of those dogs.  When I saw them taking does illegally because they didn't have time to identify legal bucks, it was time for me to get out of that club.  And I did.

Now, the thrill of the chase and the sound of a pack of Walkers hot on the trail is undeniably exciting.  But the danger was simply too great.  I'm surprised no one got shot or killed by MVA.  Lots of collisions with trees and overturned vehicles.  Insane.

Man that was indeed the "wrong crowd" to fall in with!

Over the years I have been in several clubs that ran dogs, none were remotely close to what you described.

Cured me of wanting to run with those boys and helped me appreciate still hunting.

I still like to hear the dogs run, though.  Just not up close and personal.  Not too crazy, though when a pack of Walkers runs through my little personal 19 acres of paradise.  As the saying goes down here "dogs don't know no trespassing signs," and Walkers can cover a lot of territory very quickly.

Our home is on a hill crest in the middle of the front 4 acres, the barn about half way back to the rear property line.  We don't even go outside behind/below the barn during deer season without full hunter orange on.

Good idea.   :thumbup1  I never hunted deer with dogs.  Just small game like birds and rabbits and squirrels.   Used to get invited along on the occasional coon hunt down in the bottoms with a bunch of local guys who spent more on their dogs than they did on their wives and kids.  :facepalm  I think they kept hoping I'd throw in with them and their "club" and contribute to their continued delinquency.   I decided I could get loaded up with ticks, chiggers and mosquito bites without having to wander all over Panther Creek bottoms by the dark of the moon waiting for the hounds to tree something so I declined their invitation.   :coffee

Now opponents of a deer culling operation are citing the above shooting in efforts to shut down the ongoing after dark cull in Ann Arbor Michigan:
