I see this as a small step forward.  Perhaps one day the right to arms will get the same respect as other natural rights.
Freedom trumps fear.  Rights trump security.  Free will trumps order.

I always find it hypocritical that folks on the left (I'm looking right at you, Gov. MacAuliffe) want to give convicted felons back their voting rights, but not their gun rights.

I remember about 10 years ago, when I lived in WA, my state rep (I forget his name) authored a bill to do that, but he even wanted to include felons still on parole and probation.  He went on a local (Seattle-Puget Sound region) conservative talk radio show (and I will give him credit for being willing to go into 'opposition territory' to defend his position) to talk about it.  I called in and managed to utterly flummox him by asking how he reconciled the wanting one but not the other. (This was, IIRC, les than 2 years after the fiasco of the 2004 governor's election in that state.)

To me, the fact that they only want to restore the voting rights seems to illustrate that the whole thing is about votes.
