Someone downsize recently?
« on: December 20, 2021, 10:55:21 am »
Amusing story, my shop just got two new to us machines, and more recently I got to help set them up for one of our jobs.  This involved going through what was already on the machines.

We had a few programs like "upper" and "lower" and tools in the tool lists like "Magwell broach."  Seems the machine might have some interesting pedigree.

I hope you were able to save them off, and take a look at 'em?

Just a quick glance.  We saved them to see if there were useful bits.  A coworker already likes their program to probe zero sets.  We don't do anything defense or firearm related so we didn't look at the programs hard.

This.  And how many manufacturers are putting out 1911s?

Tons. Though CZ and RIA are just about the only good consumer ones

Springfield 1911s (in my experience) are... okay.  But overpriced for what you get.  Ruger makes a nice 1911. Or made: it's been a few years since I've handled one so I've no idea what their current production looks like.

Point being, there's almost certainly room in the market for another BHP manufacturer.

Springfield, ruger and other such 1911's are functionally rock Island armory guns under different brands AFAIK.

I was looking at Rock Island for my next 1911, assuming I don't get my garage cnc mill and make one myself first.

I was thinking of doing the same... without the garage cnc machine, since I don't have one.

The configuration I want for a 1911 doesn't exist without spending $$$$... Thinking of starting with an RIA, and tweaking it, or starting with one of these, and getting it coated

I'm a maroon: wasn't paying attention to which thead this was, thought it was the "The Ogre Returns" thread.  Hence my remark about the market probably supporting a second BHP manufacturer.

If it makes you feel better, I noticed the discrepancy but thought it was typed intentionally to make a point about where SA fits in the hierarchy.

I'm also seriously thinking of getting my hands on a cnc machine. What platforms are you looking at?

I was looking at a Tormach MX.  A Haas tool room mill can be had cheap but it's doubtful it would have some of the features I would want.

Ah, you're thinking milling & steelwork.

    I'm aiming for woodwork.

I've planned to get a router too.  I'm looking at home brew due to cost, there are a few options to look at and with a CNC machine on tap I'd have some options for making parts. It's been years since I've looked hard at them, if I was to buy one I'd have to do a lot of looking.
