Is Your Home Bulletproof?
« on: October 18, 2016, 06:59:19 pm »
Well this is something often discussed in firearms groups, survivalist and police circles.

Board houses will need some protection internally to stop bullets.
Yet log homes are the way forward for this, but will logs actually stop bullets?

Here are the results using logs of varying thicknesses!

The results are interesting to say the least. If you are using most types of softwood, there is a good chance of anything above .22LR blowing through single log thicknesses up to 10 inches. However, with hardwoods and larchwood the difference was astounding...

This is where almost anything is better than American stick framing. Mud, logs, adobe, stone, brick, timberframe with rubble infill, concrete, etc.  Although I suspect that if the insulation was taken out, and the space between the studs was filled with sand, it would work very well.

Mine is slump block so I'm pretty much good for anything up to heavy rifle rounds unless something sails out through a window or a door.

    What's slump block?

    What's slump block?
basically a cinderblock that's pulled from the mold while slightly wet, causing it to 'slump'
basically- it's a pretty version of a cinderblock.

I want to build my house out of quarry rock/boulders.
because I like the way huge lumps of quartz and granite look and having a house exterior capable of stopping antitank weapons.

My house is NOT bullet proof. A couple of years ago at 3:00am, I got a knock on the door from a couple of deputies from my local Sheriff's office. Long story short, my neighbor's nut-job wife tried to murder him. They fought over the gun (.38spl loaded with Winchester silvertips) and when it off, the bullet went through a bunch of clothes they had hanging on an interior door, through the interior door, through the interior wall, out the exterior wall, sailed across both or our yards, into my exterior wall and left a huge bubble on my interior wall.

    Nut-job is still in prison.

Actually its a bit denser than cinder block.  One of the slump block my house is made of weighs about half again as much as a cinder block and its a smaller block besides.

If I ever get to build a custom house,  I'd kind of like to do it out of concrete like this one.

I have seen a few of these. Always seemed like a super cool house construction.

Here's a link to slump block construction. A lot of older homes in AZ are built using them.

I'll bet rammed earth construction would be good to go for anything up to artillery.

Actually, the older ones ( circa 1978  )  seem to be slightly heavier than the current stuff.   :shrug

I grew up in one when we moved to Scottsdale in 1970.  I don't think I've seen a new build.
