Airguns Anyone???
« on: June 19, 2021, 09:03:33 am »
I am a newbe on this forum and was wondering if there were any airgun enthusiasts here. I don't mean the Daisy BB gun (which is great) but some high end airguns that are now out there.

My stable consists of 3 Sheridans, one Air Force Condor (22) and a Benjamin Discovery (22) both of which are PCPs. Top it off with  Avanti Target air rifle and pistol (177)

Airgun hunting is permitted in my area (22 cal maximum) and I prefer hunt in small areas which would not be safe to use standard firearms.

I would like to hear of your opinions and what gear you have and use.

I've thought about buying one, especially with the way ammo prices are.

I like using airguns to teach the young ones how to shoot.  Using .177's so far - an older Crosman side lever spring piston pistol and a Dianawerk ( RWS ) 134 .  They have proven themselves over time as reliable platforms and accurate enough to be interesting.  Also, the rifle is powerful enough to take down the occasional pest as needed.  Tree rats mostly at conversational distances.

If I were serious about airgun hunting - and I may become serious about it, depending on ammo availability - I would likely go with a larger caliber.  Probably a .22 because of general availability but I always had good luck with my Dad's old Sheridan rifle in .20 .  .  .   :hmm

The .25's are also intriguing in terms of retained energy downrange but, like the .20's, their availability is suspect and the number of guns in those calibers is considerably smaller than the .177's and the .22's.

If I can reliably bag squirrels and rabbits with it at 30 yards I would call it good.  PCP guns are all the rage but seem prohibitively expensive to me at this point.  I'm thinking a good quality spring piston gun with a sound suppressor and accurate enough to make optics useful might be just the thing.  I would entertain the idea of a gas piston gun as well if I can convince myself they are viable long term investments.  I would also like to pick up a CO2 powered target pistol just to help me stay sharp on fundamentals.  They seem to solve more problems than they raise over a longish range session for me or one of the kids I'm helping to learn the ropes.

Are you using a motorized pump set up for your PCP's?

I have an old Crossman BB gun that is still at my parent's house.   I never really used it much since my mom was so paranoid I'd get arrested every time I tried to shoot it in the backyard.

Honestly it was surprising they ever let me have one at all since they aren't really gun people.

    Coalacanth,

If you scope a springer air rifle, make sure that the scope is airgun rated.  Standard scopes cannot handle the "double recoil" produced by a springer.

The first quality air rifle I ever had was a Sheridan. I still have it.  It has been rebuilt a couple of times.

A little history on that Sheridan, while I was in 'Nam, my father each morning would walk the family dog in the woods and he would take the Sheridan along for plinking purposes.

This particular fall morning, the dog "bumped" up a grouse and my father took a quick snap shot.  He beaned it!!!!!!  A million to one shot!!

Excellent.   :thumbup1  Instinctive shooting looks like magic when you see it - or experience it for yourself.  I think the truth of the matter is we continue to learn, adapt and hone muscle memory to produce a desired outcome whatever our field of endeavor.   The magic is the part that is performed by brain and body seemingly without conscious thought or volition.

In days gone by I also did a lot of dog walking across the fields and wooded patches of the family farm.  The dog walked up the quail and the rabbits and kept the squirrels anchored in the tree.  My job was to make sure they got home and were cleaned and prepped for cooking.  A single shot .22 rifle or the old 16 gauge smoothbore was always close at hand for such forays and a Case pocketknife was kept sharp for the cleaning chores.

I agree about the scope selection.  Cheaply made stuff is not generally up to the task.  I have not made a selection yet but I lean toward the scopes produced by Hawk and Swift for air rifle specific models.   The little springer rifle I use now is not really a candidate for optics as it tends to be used at very short ranges ( usually inside twenty yards ) and scopes complicate the learning process for the young ones.

Hey, maybe its time to spread your wings a bit.    :cool

I kind of did that when I was in college 20 years ago.  I sort of skipped the BB guns and went straight into the real deal when I bought an AK back in 2001.   I miss the days when you could spend $300 and get a SAR-1 and half a dozen magazines and then a case of ammo for $75.

It might be worth it to get one of those nice higher end air rifles with the way ammo prices are.   It should work fine at the 25 meter range, and when I'm spending at least .75 a round to shoot regular guns,  it would pay for itself in short order.

Agreed.  It allows you to practice good fundamentals - sometimes in your back yard or your basement - instead of packing up and schlepping everything to the range.

I have an indoor air gun range. You know, from the laundry room, through the shop to the pellet trap on the back wall.  Works just fine during those inclement weather winter days.

With my Condor air rifle,I can fire off about 100 pellets from a tank fill (low power) at the outdoor range for about a total cost of $3.00.

Targets are broken clay pigeon pieces at 50 yards.

Beauty of air guns is that there is no brass to scrounge/pick up and reload. On the Condor,I have a DonnyFL suppressor so at low power there is virtually no noise.

Also, suppressor for air guns do not require the $200 Tax stamp and wait, just order over the counter.

:thumbup1   Are you using a motorized pump or a hand pump for the Condor?

    Coelacanth,
I have a Umarex compressor.  Takes about ten minutes to fill the Condor tank, but I have to let the compressor cooling fan run for about another 1/2 hour to bring the temperature down to normal.

For the Benjamin Discovery,I use the hand "bicycle type" pump. Takes about 40 pumps to fill it up. Good for about 25-30 shots.

:thumbup1  Thanks.  I lean toward a hand pump because of the initial cost and also the simplicity of being able to toss it in the truck for field days.  I am concerned the hand pump might not be up to the task of properly drying the air that is passed to the gun's tank and thus causing corrosion issues.  Opinions on that seem to run from A to Z so I'd appreciate your input as an actual user.

I don't mind the physical effort involved in pumping but I don't want to cause myself equipment problems down the road because I went cheap on it the from the outset.

As an aside, I was on the Airguns of Arizona site last evening and they seem to be sold out of the majority of stuff they used to carry.  I guess the run on firearms and ammunition has bled over into the air gun arena as well.

    Coelacanth,
Using a handpump to fill a tank such as a Condor's requires A LOT OF PUMPING.  Most hand pumps have an air filter at the inlet so I don't think there would be an issue.

Plus every five years you have to have the tank tested and inspected for any corrosion issues.

The Umarex compressor will also run off your car battery  (but engine must be running to prevent drain on the battery) and it does have a moisture filter.

Try checking out Pyramidair  or Bullseye Air to see if they have what you want.  Also check the Crosman.com site

Good to know.  I will check those sites but I'm in no hurry at this point and prefer to deal with local merchants whenever possible.  Quirky?  Yeah, but I'm retireded and its begun to skew my attitude.   >:D

Always good to deal with your local merchants but sometimes in specialized items, they don't have that inventory or knowledge about the products.

Well, they've always had a good inventory but right now they are looking pretty sad.  I think they just got slammed with orders and the supply chain is maybe a bit backed up.

    Coelacanth,
Hopefully your local shops will get resupplied soon.

A friend of mine who works in a LGS in Ohio said that the other day they received a tractor trailer load of ammo. So hopefully that will keep up.

Interesting.  My LGS just got in a pallet of ammo two or three days ago.  It's probably mostly gone by now, but it's the first non-"dribs and drabs" quantity he's received in the last six months.

With more folks starting to turn to airguns, there are some shortages there as well but nowhere like for conventional firearms.

Now that Remington is back on line and running 24/7 and the pandemic scam,I mean scare,is pretty much gone, more factories are up to full production.

The latest report from the National Shooting Sports Foundation says that there were 9  million new shooters last year. Nine million anything will put a drain on any supply.
