.357 Magnum, 158 gr JHP's are probably the best all around problem solver you could have.
Pretty much optimum medicine for anything on 2 legs.

Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

Maybe for you, but I can never get them to feed reliably in my Glock assault rifle with 50 rounds clips. Maybe it's the chain saw grip or the zombie ax bayonet...

I carry PPU 158 JHP's in my snubnose.   1150-1160 from the 2.75" barrel and 1220-1235 from a 6".  Not THE hottest but soft lead and huge HP.   Good for snubby carry because they don't lose much velocity.

For my 6" though I carry American Eagle 158 JSP.......yeah.....it's not really my CWP handgun but it shoots em out at  1300FPS.

I take it by 'overheated,' you refer to what they would call 'full power' and 'not watered down?'

     I'm thinking he's meaning Buffalo Bore,etc. rounds.

I don't like watered down .357's except specific circumstances, like snubbies, etc.  BB's however.......there's only so much an extra 100-150FPS will do and while I applaud BB's loading......I doubt I'd use any myself because I don't think that little bit extra really matters.

    blast from the past  :panic

When I started, Sheriff at that time wanted us to carry our extra rounds in a belt loop carrier on the duty belt.  and he only issued Winchester Silvertip's,  because he liked they way they looked.

been so long, I don't even remember the bullet weight of that round (1986).

I take it by 'overheated,' you refer to what they would call 'full power' and 'not watered down?'

Or he could be referring to a proper matching of the projectile to the intended powder charge.  This has been demonstrated in various ammo test videos.

Was a factor, the shooter believes, in this load given their use of the Speer projectile with their chosen powder charge.

Whereas this is a bit closer to the classic Federal load, a Remington load in its original configuration.

And this is what I'd use in a .357 Magnum... the Federal 158 grain load...or the 125 grain version.

Barry of Iraqveteran8888's channel (God rest his soul) is shown to discuss how an officer he knew described the kills made on duty using a .357 Magnum as "blowing out a birthday candle".

I use, and like the Federal 158 grain loads. That's the high water mark for me.  A lot of loads though are watered down - such as many "Defense Loads".

Yes, I agree.  That's what I had when I carried my Ruger Security Six.  Why fix what's not broken?   :cool

Arthritis symptoms in the wrists have improved a bit from all the various treatments.  This might enable me to move back up to .357 revolvers again....in which case, I'll be carrying this Federal load in new Rugers I'd love to buy  (4" GP100, 3" SP101s)  :thumbup1

IMO, Federal makes the best commercial 357 ammo available right now.  I like the 158 gr Hydrashok in the revolvers and the American Eagle 158 gr JSP for the rifles.

Once again, why no love for the 125 grainers?

    Quote
    The .357 magnum

One cartridge stands above all others in this caliber in the history of American law enforcement: the 125-grain semi-jacketed hollow point loaded to a velocity in the 1,400 fps range (from a 4-inch barrel). Some experts argue whether the wide-mouthed Federal version of this load, or the scallop-jacket Remington version that originally popularized the 125-grain .357 among cops, is the single best of the breed.

It seems to be an argument akin to how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. The Winchester 125-grain Magnum load does not have either of those features, but worked every bit as well for such departments as the Maine State Police when they carried .357 revolvers.

This round tends to create a wound channel that is nine to 11 inches deep, but very wide, with tremendous damage around the radius of the wound track. It also has a nasty muzzle blast and pretty sharp recoil. The great combat shooting trainer and champion, Ray Chapman, used to say that the 125-grain Magnum load’s almost magical stopping power was the only reason to load .357 instead of .38 Special +P ammunition into a fighting revolver chambered for the Magnum round. I agree. When departments such as City of Indianapolis Police Department, and the state troopers of Kentucky and Indiana issued that load, there were literally tons of bad guys shot with 125-grain Magnums, and they tended to go down “right now.” Texas Department of Public Safety personnel were known to refer to this round’s “lightning bolt effect,” and I knew Kentucky troopers who called it “the magic bullet.”

Even though velocity dropped considerably from the 2.5-inch barrels of Indiana State Police detectives’ Combat Magnums, or from the 3-inch Military & Police .357s of Indianapolis plainclothesmen, the bad guys seem to go down just as fast. The 125-grain .357 Magnum semi-jacketed hollow point earned its title, bestowed by expert Ed Sanow, as “King of the Street,” and this remains the Magnum load of choice today. I have no personal preference among the Federal, Remington, and Winchester brands.

Good point.  I used to carry 158gr as I got boxes of them with my Security Six in the trade.  I do recall reading about the 125gr version of the Federal load as being "the one" and would definitely consider them for primary SD ammo if I remain well enough to go back to .357 revolvers for outdoor carry (and keep the 4" .38s I have now for indoor HD).
