The top item is the oiler (you probably figured that out already), the church-key looking thing on the bottom seems to be a handle for the cleaning chain and a takedown tool for the floorplate (some googling dropped me here--don't have a K98 myself).

Truth be told, I wouldn't want to run one of those steel chains through my barrel.

It's more a decerative piece, an display piece, if you will. I have acccess to aproper cleanig kit with all the fixings, and I have my own bore snake.

Actually, I asked what that piece was for, then the subject of runing metal through the bore came up, then........ I don't know? But I can see how the receiver would work.

Well, I did mention "receiver" in that post, but either way, as long as you have a big enough bore, or a small enough toothbrush, why not?

[Smaller] brushes like that work for pistol frames too. You'd be surprised all the gunk you find in those nooks and crannies. I have used these in the past with success. I like how they have a big brush and a fine brush.

One question: is there room in the butt of the piece for he cleaning kit? In my experience that extra pound of metal in the stock eats up some of the recoil. All of my M14Ses have cleaning kits in the stocks, even though I have never used them. I am concerned with using bare steel rods in chrom-lined bores, but I find the notion of a steel rod on board comforting, in case I have to knock out a squib while out training.

So, for regular cleaning, I am not so hot on a surplus kit. I do like to have one, however, if it fits in the rifle's stock.

Toothbrush indeed. A good tool. As are some Q-Tips. And I've become a fan of bore snakes. A big fat boresnake can mop out a stripped receiver tube nicely.
