Scope for Rem700 .308- 800yd plus
« on: February 06, 2013, 02:56:05 am »
I'm building a long-range setup. Got a place, a set of targets and a friend to help teach me.

Rifle will be a Rem 700AAC-SD with my 762SD-N6 can. That rifle only comes in .308 with a 1-10 twist 20" barrel.

The plan is to learn to shoot torso sized targets out to 800yd or more. We're not sure what the max range of our little spot is yet, so 800 is the initial plan.

I want MOA reticle-MOA turrets. I'm a navigator, so my brain works in degrees/minutes/seconds. What magnification is up for debate. I'm half blind (which is why I'm an Air Force Navigator and not an Air Force Pilot) so high magnification is a must. Variable is also a must, since I want the rig to be flexible from ragged hole at 100yd to COM at 800+. FFP vs SFP is a question.

Optics budget is tentatively set at less than $1,000. I'm looking to cry once on this scope. The budget is flexible, but not extremely so. Less is good but not at the expense of quality.

So what are the recommendations?

I have a Zeiss Conquest (the one linked above actually).  Fantastic glass.  Highly recommended.

While mine is a RAPID-Z reticle, they do make it with MIL-DOT.  The turrets on the other hand, they're MOA.

I'm picking up my. Vortex pst tomorrow. It will be a mil/mil scope with ffp.  Can't provide more info yet but I got a good guy discount on it.  Otherwise it would be closer to $900 or $950, whatever MAP is on it.

Many of the long range shooters I know ate going with MRAD instead of MOA.  Supposedly they can be more accurate with it but I guess that also comes with practice.

Steven, might have to copy-cat you. That Vortex also comes in MOA-MOA with FFP. I've shot my cousin's Vortex (Viper, I think) and it's great glass. I've been looking at Vortex for my next AR build, but I think it might be a winner for this, too.

I'm an admitted Vortex whore so I'd point you towards the PST line from them in either 4-16 or 6-24.

    https://www.primaryarms.com/Vortex_Viper_PST_416x50_FFP_EBR1_MRAD_Retic_p/pst-416f1-m.htm

    https://www.primaryarms.com/Vortex_Viper_PST_624x50_FFP_EBR1_MRAD_Retic_p/pst-624f1-m.htm

I really like the FFP, it makes everything from zeroing the rifle to ranging and wind calls easier and as thought free as they can be.
But it does cost more, you can get these same scopes in SFP for about $200 less.

I've got the 4-16 on the Broadsword, and I'm going to put the 6-24 on my upcoming .300 win build.

I've seen a lot of the PST scopes in our training classes. I think they are a good deal. I like the magnification ring on the SFP models a lot since it has positive stops and your multiplier on the ring. I would stick with FFP but if you have to go SFP I've liked what I've seen from them.

The guy I bought miine form has an MOA-MOA FFP Vortex Viper PST for a super good guy price.  I can't listed it here but it's really is a good guy price.  I'll PM you price.

Possible shift in plans. It turns out I can get a pretty substantial discount from Zeiss through Promotive.com. I'll only make the switch if they have a comparable scope to the Vortex. At the same price point I'm looking at a 3-digit discount with Zeiss.

ETA: Disregard. Looks like Zeiss only has BDC reticles, and they're all SFP. I can get both with the Vortex. Shame Vortex doesn't work with Promotive.

Do you mean the ones available to you?  Because Zeiss does have MIL-DOT reticles.  They call it "Reticle 43".

Their entire product line is available to me, but I want MOA. That's a personal preference, sure, but my brain is highly trained in degrees.minutes.seconds and I use that sort of mental math on a daily basis at work. Don't have any desire to go metric.

    Ooooohhhoo... MOA reticle.

Somehow I misunderstood you to mean mil turrets.  You weren't unclear about it though, so I don't know how I didn't get that.   :shrug

I want MOA everything. The seemingly popular Mil-dot/MOA-turret setup is baffling to me. It's like saying "I want a car with the speedometer in KPH and speed limit signs in MPH. Don't worry, I have a chart to take care of the conversion."

I also don't want any sort of BDC. Looks cool on the surface, or if you're willing to pay for the ammo it is calibrated for and a barrel that matches the test barrel. I have a Nikon BDC on my AR, and it's usable now that I have access to a chrony and a ballistics app on my phone. The app tells me what the hashes actually mean that day with that load.

I've always been the type that would rather have the raw data and the knowledge to use it rather than someone else's half-baked solution that works under very specific conditions.

Just ordered. Found one on Ebay for $925 ($25 under anywhere else) with free shipping. Got a Nightforce canted base on the way, and I'll take everything to one of the local shops to try on rings whenever it all gets here.

Awesome.  I'm still trying to buy rings.   The scope is nice.  Love the ffp.
