Savage Model 99
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:10:19 am »
I want to put a scope on my model 99 savage. I would like to have the mount that will allow me to still use my fixed sights. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I replied to your post in the Scope School thread, but you may have missed it, so I'll repeat it here.

Definitely don't drill and tap it.

I don't know of another mount other than the Stith that will work on an older 99 like that, so your choices are pretty much the Stith or learn to love the iron sights.

Personally, I'd choose the latter. If you really want a scoped rifle there are plenty of good options available that will probably shoot better and won't require altering an heirloom and potentially valuable vintage rifle.

I'll add that scope mounts that let you still use the iron sights sound like a great idea - they're not. They put the scope too high to use a proper cheek weld and they tend to incorporate the sort of crappy rings that induce wandering zeros and even break scopes.

I think some of the Savage 99's were drilled and tapped for a scope mount. If your is then the Leupold base might fit:

If yours is not drilled and tapped, then the only alternative is a Stith mount but I don't know of anyone who them any more.
